Compare the actual Claro and Tigo issue process
Claro Ecuador's prepaid eSIM page describes online issue of a new number, transfer or replacement. A compatible phone activates the profile by scanning a QR code; the page gives iPhone and Android instructions. An EID displayed with Claro's handset code can help check compatibility. The page gives no traveller package or promise that foreign identity documents pass online validation. Confirm eligibility and retain access to the activation email or account.
Tigo Ecuador's eSIM page describes an online flow with an emailed QR code. Its help centre also directs customers to a service centre and says only the account holder may request an eSIM with an original identity document; photographs and third parties are not accepted. At the time of checking it displays US$5.13 including tax for a new-line eSIM, subject to promotions. This issue charge does not establish an included data allowance.
Use a staffed shop when document acceptance is uncertain
Tigo's eSIM help page requires original identity documentation but does not say whether every foreign passport qualifies online. Its service-centre page lists passport transactions and service islands in Guayaquil, Quito, Cuenca and other cities. A staffed centre is therefore a place to ask about a visitor line, without guaranteeing eligibility for a particular tariff. Bring the entry passport and confirm the number, package and registered name before leaving.
Tigo's original-document and account-holder instructions make the ownership check explicit. Claro describes self-service without a full visitor document list, so verify acceptance directly. If the home number is needed for bank or airline messages, check dual-line support and select which line carries data and which receives texts.
Check the ARCOTEL maps for each stop
Ecuador's telecom regulator, ARCOTEL, links separate mobile coverage views for CONECEL, CNT and OTECEL. Check the hotel and onward destinations rather than treating an airport signal as a countrywide test. A plotted area cannot guarantee indoor reception, service on a moving bus or a boat signal. For an Andes road journey, Amazon lodge or Galápagos crossing, download maps and bookings before departing a town with service.
Claro publishes a list of sectors where it says 5G is available. At the time of checking its examples include La Carolina in Quito, Kennedy Norte in Guayaquil and the historic centre of Cuenca; the page says more sectors are planned. These are operator claims, not an independent measurement. For a trip beyond those urban sectors, prioritise address-level coverage information over a broad 5G label.
Check a handset's IMEI without inventing a tourist deadline
ARCOTEL's Tu Celular Legal service allows an IMEI check against Ecuador's list of handsets blocked from its mobile networks and shows the reason for a listing. The regulator notes that a dual-SIM phone may have an IMEI for each SIM position and advises checking all identifiers when buying a phone. This is especially relevant if a second-hand handset was acquired locally or a newly purchased phone fails to attach to a network. Keep the purchase record and seek the operator's or ARCOTEL's advice if a handset is blocked.
The cited ARCOTEL page sets no blanket registration clock for a visitor's personal phone. A connection problem may instead involve a locked handset, unsupported eSIM model or weak local signal. Check compatibility, the selected data line and the operator's map. Record the IMEI securely before travel in case the phone is lost or fails to connect.
Treat the islands and Guayaquil arrival separately
The Galápagos are a distinct coverage question from mainland Quito and Guayaquil. ARCOTEL's map offers an operator view to inspect for Puerto Ayora, Puerto Baquerizo Moreno or the particular island stop, but its public page does not provide a single verified figure for coverage across all islands. An older ARCOTEL quality report documents tests in Galápagos localities in 2019; it should not be used as a current reception promise. If a boat itinerary includes remote sites, ask the vessel or accommodation about actual service and save meeting points, tickets and important messages before sailing.
For arrivals through José Joaquín de Olmedo Airport, the Guayaquil airport operator says its network named Guayaquil Airport Free Wifi is available without charge in public areas and domestic and international boarding areas. It also lists an information desk in international arrivals. That network offers a place to retrieve an eSIM QR code or contact a transfer provider while a local line is arranged. Check the network name against airport signs and store the first destination address before leaving the terminal. Airport Wi-Fi does not establish mobile coverage at the next hotel, on the coast or in Galápagos.
Separate Ecuador data from onward roaming
ARCOTEL says international roaming is an operator service that may need activation and whose data, voice and SMS charges depend on the destination and purchased plan. Ask the home provider for its Ecuador rate before leaving and disable unintended data roaming on the home line if a local profile will carry data. A local package bought for Ecuador should also not be assumed to work in Peru or Colombia. Tigo's roaming page mentions a Community of Andean Nations arrangement for Ecuador subscribers in Colombia, Peru and Bolivia, but eligibility still follows the contracted tariff; confirm the exact product and conditions before crossing a border.
Tigo's site provides Mi Tigo and online recharge links, while its service-centre page lists shops and support channels. Use the account or a staffed centre to check the active bundle, expiry and top-up route instead of inferring these from the eSIM issue fee. For a multi-stop holiday, verify whether more data can be added away from a city before departure.
Keep a voice route to ECU 911
The government's ECU 911 service page says both Ecuadorian and foreign people can report an emergency by calling 911 anywhere in the country. It also describes an ECU 911 smartphone app, which requires the user to enter personal details and can prompt a return call during coordination. Save 911 and a clear address or landmark for each stop; the official instructions ask callers to give the incident and location. A data-only eSIM's internet connection does not by itself establish that its profile can make a conventional emergency voice call, and the cited pages do not confirm this for every digital profile.
Guayaquil airport Wi-Fi can help with arrival messages, but keep a voice-capable phone and know which SIM handles calls. If using the ECU 911 app, complete registration beforehand; an app still needs a working connection. The government says emergency attention is available around the clock without a service charge. It gives no reception promise for a beach, mountain trail or vessel.
