An Indian mobile plan can be useful across a long itinerary, but buying one after landing involves identity checks and activation rather than simply paying for a card. Airtel and Jio both support eSIMs, though their conversion instructions assume an existing, working Indian number. For a route that moves from Delhi to another state, compare the actual coverage map for each stop and keep a connection available while the local line is being verified.

## Bring the right documents for a local connection

The Department of Telecommunications' published 2012 instructions say a foreign tourist's passport and valid visa are used as identity evidence for a mobile connection. For the local address, the operator may record a local reference, such as a tour operator, or the hotel address if there is no reference. That document limits a tourist connection to the visa period and to three months at a time even where the visa lasts longer. Because the instructions predate electronic visas and may have been supplemented, ask the operator what current evidence and validity rules it applies rather than assuming a physical visa stamp will be available.

Jio's own help page asks new prepaid customers for original proof of identity and address at a Jio store, Reliance Digital outlet or retailer, and lists a passport among its examples. It describes an Aadhaar-based biometric route separately. A visiting passport holder should ask for the passport route and have the accommodation address ready; an Indian resident's Aadhaar process is not a sensible substitute. The Department's 2012 instructions bar the sale of pre-activated cards, so expect activation to happen after the seller has checked your details. Test the new number and data service before leaving the counter.

## How Airtel and Jio handle eSIMs

Airtel says an existing customer can request conversion through the Airtel app, provide the phone's EID, verify an OTP sent to the registered number and complete a confirmation call. It says a new eSIM connection requires a store visit. Airtel also warns that incoming and outgoing SMS, including verification messages, are barred for 24 hours after an eSIM conversion request is completed. That temporary SMS interruption matters if you need bank codes, hotel logins or train-booking verification on the same number immediately after changing formats.

Jio describes a similar distinction: its online MyJio conversion flow starts with an existing Jio number, email and device EID, then uses an OTP and an automated call. Jio says a two-hour cooling period applies after the request. Its page links new customers to a separate new-SIM route; it does not establish that an arriving foreign visitor can obtain a fresh local eSIM remotely before identity verification. If having data the moment the aircraft lands is important, use a clearly confirmed roaming or travel plan for the arrival and arrange a local number later if needed.

## Check network maps for the actual journey

India's telecom regulator, TRAI, points travellers to operator-published maps for Airtel, Jio and Vodafone Idea. Its press release says the maps can be filtered by technology, including 4G and 5G, and searched by location. Compare the places where you will stay, not only the arrival city: a Delhi hotel, a railway transfer and a remote excursion can present different reception conditions. TRAI explicitly warns that actual coverage may differ from the map, particularly indoors, so a coloured area is a planning aid rather than a service guarantee.

Do not infer nationwide 5G access from an eSIM-compatible phone or a plan headline. The operator must offer 5G in the area, the chosen plan must permit it, and the handset must support that network. TRAI's maps help with a multi-state trip. Save maps and tickets offline for long train journeys or excursions where a live connection is uncertain.

## Make a Delhi airport connection before leaving arrivals

Delhi Airport's Wi-Fi page describes two sign-in routes. Travellers with an active Indian number can use that number for the GMR FREE WIFI network, while visitors without one can use a passport at a kiosk or information desk to obtain access. This is a useful place to download an eSIM profile, retrieve a hotel address or contact the person meeting you. Do the setup while you can still seek airport assistance; an OTP sent to an Indian number will not help if that number has not yet been issued or activated.

Before entering a taxi or train, open the map to your accommodation and check which line handles data. Keep passport and visa evidence accessible if you plan to buy a local SIM after leaving the airport.

## Keep the local line usable on a long trip

Airtel's app supports prepaid recharge, balance checks and plan-validity checks, according to the operator. Jio's help page says MyJio and Jio.com show active prepaid plans, remaining balance and validity after OTP login. Once a local line works, check the validity date instead of assuming that an unused data allowance will continue for the whole itinerary. Recharge through the operator's channel while you still have Wi-Fi or mobile data, and keep the login number available to receive an OTP. A plan selected for daily data may suit a different pattern from one with a single total allowance, so read the current pack description at the time of purchase.

IRCTC's official material identifies its Rail Connect app and website as channels for train ticket booking. A working connection helps with last-minute checks and account messages, but a saved ticket or booking reference remains valuable if the train passes through a weak-signal area. If your accommodation, railway account or payment service sends verification texts to your home number, a data-only eSIM alone will not receive those standard SMS messages. Keep the relevant voice and SMS line enabled and check the charge for receiving or sending messages while roaming.

## Distinguish Indian domestic roaming from your home plan

TRAI's roaming guidance discusses charges for an Indian subscription when it moves between Indian service areas. It says there is no separate domestic roaming charge on data usage under those rules, while voice and text treatment depends on the tariff. That does not say anything about the cost of using a foreign home SIM in India. For an overseas visitor, the home provider's India roaming terms or a separately purchased travel plan determine the charge. Check the country list and allowance before departure, including whether the plan supports tethering or only on-device use if that matters to your trip.

If you retain a foreign line for authentication, decide which line handles data and which can place calls. Schedule Airtel or Jio eSIM conversions when you can wait for their verification steps to finish, rather than immediately before a train departure.

## Save 112 and keep a way to call it

India's government Emergency Response Support System identifies 112 as the national number for urgent police, fire and medical assistance. It describes telephone, SMS, web and app channels, but those are different ways to reach the service and each has its own requirements. A data-only eSIM should not be treated as a normal voice line merely because it lets you open a web page. Keep a voice-capable SIM or another reliable calling method available, know which line the phone will use for a call, and share an accurate location when asking for help.

The 112 India app is presented as another way to raise an emergency request with location information. Install it in advance if you intend to use it; do not wait for an urgent incident to discover its sign-in or permissions. Offline copies of your itinerary, accommodation address and identity documents also help if you lose data coverage or the handset's battery is low. A mobile plan makes daily travel easier, but it should sit alongside these basic backups.

Emergency calls: Many travel eSIMs carry data only, and a data-only profile may not place a normal phone call. Keep a voice-capable SIM for emergencies, such as your home SIM or a local plan, and save the local emergency number from this guide.

## Questions

### Can a foreign visitor buy an Indian prepaid SIM with a passport?

The Department of Telecommunications' tourist instructions treat a passport and valid visa as identity evidence and allow a hotel address where there is no local reference. Jio also lists a passport among documents for a new prepaid connection. Take original documents and ask the chosen store how it handles your visa format.

### Can I activate a fresh Airtel or Jio eSIM before landing?

The online eSIM steps shown by both operators mainly describe converting an existing Indian number with OTP and device verification. Airtel directs new eSIM applicants to a store. Do not assume the conversion steps let an unverified first-time visitor obtain a local number remotely.

### Where can I compare 4G and 5G coverage in India?

TRAI links to maps published by Airtel, Jio and Vodafone Idea and says they can be filtered by mobile technology. Check each planned stop, then allow for the regulator's warning that actual indoor reception can differ from a map.

### Will Delhi Airport Wi-Fi work without an Indian number?

Delhi Airport says visitors without an active Indian number can present a passport at a Wi-Fi kiosk or information desk. Its separate sign-in route for Indian numbers uses the GMR FREE WIFI network.

### Will my Indian prepaid data be charged for domestic roaming?

TRAI says its national roaming rules do not add a separate data usage charge, though voice and SMS depend on the tariff. A foreign home SIM uses that provider's international roaming terms instead.

### What is the emergency number in India?

The government's Emergency Response Support System gives 112 for urgent police, fire and medical assistance. Keep a voice-capable way to call; an ordinary data-only eSIM does not by itself provide a telephone number for voice calls.
