# Bahamas travel eSIM guide

> Compare Bahamas mobile options from ALIV and BTC, local eSIM setup, island coverage evidence, Nassau airport Wi-Fi, ferries, roaming and emergency calling.

Nassau reception does not establish service on Eleuthera, Exuma, Abaco or a ferry. The Bahamas' regulator identifies ALIV and BTC as the two main mobile operators. ALIV publishes a store-issued eSIM and prepaid plans; the checked official material did not clearly document BTC's visitor eSIM process. Test a line before leaving New Providence and keep ferry details offline.

## ALIV's eSIM is issued at a retail store

ALIV says a customer buys its eSIM at an ALIV store and receives an activation QR code or a store-assisted activation process. Its FAQ says the eSIM costs the same as a physical ALIV SIM and can carry ordinary calls and SMS as well as data. The page gives no fixed SIM price, so ask for the total SIM and plan cost at the counter. Dial *#06# and look for an EID to check eSIM capability, then check the handset's network compatibility before making the journey to a shop.

ALIV says a compatible, unlocked phone can use its eSIM while retaining a physical SIM from another carrier. A visitor can therefore keep a home number on the physical SIM. Its FAQ says a new handset requires a visit to an ALIV store for a new eSIM; the old QR code is not portable between phones. A code accidentally deleted from the original phone may be rescanned there, so keep the receipt securely while travelling.

## Compare ALIV's data add-ons with a voice-inclusive plan

ALIV's live plan table lists prepaid plans with talk, text and data, including freedom8 (7 days, 1 GB, $8), freedom15 (7 days, 3 GB, $15) and liberty40 (30 days, 5 GB, $40). It separately lists prepaid data add-ons of 1 GB for $5, 2 GB for $10, 3 GB for $16 and 10 GB for $31. The page says prepaid prices include VAT and that a fair use policy applies; confirm the exact term, eligibility and total at purchase. A data add-on should not be mistaken for a complete new line or a voice allowance.

For a visitor expecting ordinary calls, ALIV's eSIM FAQ says that regular ALIV plans can be put on an eSIM and that an eSIM and a physical SIM can both make and receive voice calls and SMS. Ask the shop to show the plan's local minutes and expiry before activating it. If data is the only need, compare the data add-ons with the base plans in the table.

BTC is the other principal operator in URCA's 2024 annual report. Its current prepaid catalogue and visitor eSIM process were not sufficiently clear in the official material checked for this guide. Ask BTC directly for its present data-and-calls offer, accepted visitor documents and whether the selected shop can provide an eSIM or physical SIM for the handset.

## Use URCA's network figures as historical evidence

URCA's 2022 mobile-market review reported operator-supplied quarterly figures for LTE broadband network availability of 98.38% for BTC and 99.76% for ALIV, and voice network availability of 94.77% and 95.22% respectively. These figures were drawn from network submissions considered in that review. They describe availability in the reporting period, not the fraction of a particular island or ferry route with usable signal in October 2026. Do not turn a nationwide service statistic into a street-level coverage promise.

URCA's later 2024 annual report still identifies both operators and reports mobile subscriptions, but it does not provide an island-by-island visitor coverage map in the opened section. Ask a hotel or boat operator about reception at the exact Exuma cay, Eleuthera settlement or Abaco dock. A second network may help on land only when its own radio signal reaches the location. Neither operator's national presence guarantees service at sea.

## Use LPIA Wi-Fi while setting up in Nassau

Lynden Pindling International Airport says free Wi-Fi is available throughout the airport under the name LPIA Free WiFi, with a brief connection form. That is a useful first link for retrieving an eSIM receipt or contacting a shop, though a Wi-Fi login does not prove mobile activation. The airport is on western New Providence; its FAQ puts it roughly 16 kilometres from downtown Nassau and lists prearranged transport options.

The airport's island guide says prepaid SIM cards are widely sold around Nassau and Paradise Island, where BTC and ALIV are the main carriers. It also notes hotel and business Wi-Fi in that area. Neither page confirms a staffed SIM desk inside arrivals, so do not promise an airport purchase. If the flight lands after shop hours, save the hotel address and transport confirmation offline and use LPIA Wi-Fi to locate the next open store.

Apple says an iPhone must be unlocked to use another carrier's eSIM and usually needs Wi-Fi or a hotspot for installation. In Settings, General, About, No SIM Restrictions under Carrier Lock is the relevant check. A phone with a physical slot can pair a home SIM with a local eSIM; explicitly choose the Bahamian line for data and review the home line's roaming settings.

## Save the ferry ticket before the Family Islands

Bahamas Ferries advertises passenger services between Nassau and Family Island destinations and describes schedules as weather permitting. Its route page names Spanish Wells and Harbour Island, Eleuthera, among its high-speed stops, with office contacts for Freeport, George Town, Governor's Harbour, Marsh Harbour and other ports. Buy or retrieve the ticket while connected in Nassau, and save a copy that opens without mobile data. Ask the operator directly about current sailing time instead of relying on a stored schedule after weather changes.

A hotel on Harbour Island and a dock on Eleuthera are different reception locations. ALIV's store locator lists Governor's Harbour and Spanish Wells as service points, but a listed store does not establish signal on the crossing or an eSIM QR code at a specific counter. Finish any line transfer or identity issue before boarding if the next island has limited opening hours. Download an offline map and the address of the onward accommodation.

## Separate Bahamas data from outward roaming

ALIV offers separate prepaid RoamEasy plans and roaming data add-ons for travel outside The Bahamas. Its roaming FAQ says these may be bought through the website, MyALIV app, kiosks or authorised resellers, and its detailed product page distinguishes plans with talk, text and data from data-only add-ons. A package labelled Caribbean or US and Canada has a specified destination list. Check the live list, the local allowance and the roaming allowance independently before crossing to another country.

That outward ALIV offer says nothing about the rate charged by a visitor's home operator upon arrival in Nassau. Ask that home operator whether The Bahamas is included and what data and call charges apply. If a home SIM remains active for verification messages, choose which line can use mobile data and whether its data roaming should be disabled. Do not infer a local plan's cross-border rights from a regional name alone.

## Keep 911 or 919 and weather information accessible

The UK government's Bahamas help page gives 911 or 919 for ambulance, fire and police. Save both with the address of the current hotel or marina. ALIV's eSIM can support normal voice calling under a suitable plan, but a data-only travel eSIM may have no normal voice route; check its actual calling terms. Test an ordinary call before leaving a shop.

The UK government says hurricane season normally runs from June to November and that the Bahamian government issues wireless emergency alerts to mobile phones. The Bahamas Department of Meteorology supplies updates. Keep the weather source, ferry contact and a route offline, particularly when a sailing or domestic flight could change. A mobile alert is useful, but its arrival cannot be guaranteed on a handset without service. Our Bahamas plan page provides another data option to compare with a local voice line.

Emergency calls: Many travel eSIMs carry data only, and a data-only profile may not place a normal phone call. Keep a voice-capable SIM for emergencies, such as your home SIM or a local plan, and save the local emergency number from this guide.

## Questions

### Can I buy an ALIV eSIM online before landing?

ALIV's published eSIM instructions tell customers to visit a store for purchase and a QR code. Ask the chosen location whether it can issue one on the intended day.

### Does an ALIV eSIM make ordinary calls?

ALIV says its eSIM can make and receive calls and SMS, subject to the active plan. Confirm a voice allowance and test a call before leaving the store.

### What ID must a tourist show for a Bahamas SIM?

The official operator pages checked here did not give a clear visitor identity-document rule. Bring a passport and confirm the exact requirement with ALIV or BTC before purchase.

### How much are ALIV's prepaid data add-ons?

At the time of checking, ALIV advertised 1 GB for $5, 2 GB for $10, 3 GB for $16 and 10 GB for $31, with prepaid prices described as VAT-inclusive. Confirm the validity terms before paying.

### Is there free Wi-Fi at Nassau's international airport?

Yes. LPIA says free Wi-Fi is available throughout the airport under LPIA Free WiFi, with a short form to connect.

### Will Nassau coverage continue on a ferry to Eleuthera?

Neither URCA's historic network-availability figures nor ALIV's shop list guarantees signal at sea. Save ferry tickets and the next address offline.

### Which emergency number works in The Bahamas?

The UK government lists both 911 and 919 for ambulance, fire and police. Keep a voice-capable line and the local address available.
