In the British Virgin Islands the Telecommunications Regulatory Commission regulates mobile service and publishes quarterly quality-of-service comparisons, while Digicel publishes a Travel eSIM page for visitors, priced in US dollars, and prepaid Prime Ultra plans. Entry has changed too: since 1 January 2025 every traveller completes an online embarkation card, and the UK Foreign Office lists a levy payable on arrival. Hurricane season and boating make alert apps and sea-rescue numbers part of the phone setup. This guide reads Digicel's pages, the regulator, the tourism board and the Foreign Office, and says where a page gave no detail.

## Digicel's Travel eSIM, free to download and priced by data

Digicel's BVI eSIM page, headed Visiting the British Virgin Islands, invites visitors to get a free Travel eSIM by selecting an option, registering and having the eSIM emailed instantly. At the time of checking, Travel eSIM 5GB cost USD 30.00 with 30 days of validity and 22 country destinations, and Travel eSIM 10GB cost USD 40.00. The page does not list the 22 countries, so check that the BVI and your next stop are included.

It does not say whether the plans include voice or SMS, which matters because the Foreign Office advises carrying a mobile phone with roaming capability. A Travel eSIM works on a compatible phone and the account is managed in the MyDigicel app.

## Prime Ultra prepaid plans and the 30-day talk plan

Digicel BVI's prepaid page lists Prime Ultra plans with unlimited on-net minutes, unlimited local SMS, social messaging and data rollover. At the time of checking, the 3-day plan cost USD 18.99 for 5 GB of any-use data plus 5 GB of entertainment data and 80 off-net and international minutes, or USD 16.99 with auto-renew, the 7-day plan cost USD 38.90 for 15 GB with 125 minutes, and the 30-day plan cost USD 99.90 for 50 GB with 300 minutes. A 30-day talk plan with 7 GB and 200 off-net minutes cost USD 59.90 and is sold with a SIM in a store.

The page says all plans include calls to Digicel numbers and off-net minutes to BVI numbers, the USA, the US Virgin Islands, Puerto Rico and Canada, and that to switch from a competitor you need a SIM activated before December 2024 and valid government ID. It also advertises a prepaid SIM delivered after an online order. It does not describe what a visitor must show to buy a prepaid SIM, so ask in a store.

## The regulator and its quarterly quality reports

The Telecommunications Regulatory Commission describes itself as regulating the BVI telecommunications sector, and its site links a consumer centre, a quality-of-service reporting portal and a Quality-of-Service Comparison. Its comparison page, dated Q2 2026 (April to June 2026), says you can compare quality-of-service results for mobile and internet services, but the figures sit in an embedded tool we could not read as text, so we cannot quote results.

That is still a useful pointer: if you want independent evidence of a network's performance before choosing, the regulator's comparison is the place to look, rather than an operator's claim of the most reliable network.

## The online embarkation card, the arrival levy and the one-month stamp

The UK Foreign Office says that from 1 January 2025 all travellers entering the BVI must complete an online embarkation card, which can be submitted up to 72 hours before arrival, so have the confirmation on your phone. UK visitors can stay up to one month without a visa and get a one-month entry stamp, extendable by the Chief Immigration Officer up to six months, and may be asked to show proof of independent financial means and plans to leave the BVI.

It says that arrivals by air or sea pay an environmental and tourism levy of 10 US dollars, that the departure tax by air is 50 US dollars and is generally included in the ticket, and that leaving by ferry costs 20 US dollars per person. The tourism board says the customs and immigration offices are at West End and Road Town on Tortola, Great Harbour on Jost Van Dyke and Spanish Town on Virgin Gorda, with opening times listed, and that a passport is required to enter and depart.

## Hurricane alerts and sea rescue numbers

The UK Foreign Office says the Caribbean hurricane season normally runs from June to November but hurricanes can occur at any time, and advises monitoring the US National Hurricane Center and the BVI Department of Disaster Management, following local authorities and downloading the DDM alert app. For emergencies at sea it gives Virgin Islands Search and Rescue, VISAR, on 767.

Because many visitors sail or take ferries between islands, save VISAR in your phone and keep it charged. We found no official coverage map for the waters between islands, so do not assume signal on a passage.

## Emergency numbers

The UK Foreign Office gives 911 for ambulance, fire and police in the BVI, 311 to contact the police directly in a non-emergency and 767 for Virgin Islands Search and Rescue at sea. It says there is no British Embassy, since the BVI is a British Overseas Territory, and the local authorities support you if you need help. Our British Virgin Islands plan page covers data before you arrive.

Emergency calls: Many travel eSIMs carry data only, and a data-only profile may not place a normal phone call. Keep a voice-capable SIM for emergencies, such as your home SIM or a local plan, and save the local emergency number from this guide.
