The Cayman Islands have two mobile providers, Digicel and Flow, and a visitor's choices are less structured than in destinations with dedicated tourist SIMs. Digicel sells short prepaid plans of two to thirty days, both operators sell prepaid cards through shops, supermarkets and gas stations, and both launched 5G in June 2024. Entry paperwork is paper-based and handed out by the airline. This guide sets out what the operators and official sources state, and where we could not find an official answer, most notably for Flow's visitor terms and for coverage on Cayman Brac and Little Cayman.

## Digicel's short prepaid plans

Digicel Cayman's prepaid page lists plans from two to 30 days. At the time of checking, the range started at KYD 8.00 for a 2-day plan with 3 GB and went up to KYD 72.00 for a 30-day plan with 45 GB. Digicel describes every plan as including endless local calls and text and endless social messaging, and as 5G enabled. It calls itself the best 5G network in the region, which is its own claim.

That short-plan structure suits a visitor, since a weekend stay needs only the 2-day plan. The page does not describe a visitor-specific product, an ID check or where a visitor can buy the card, so confirm those details with a Digicel agent. The same page notes that customers switching from Flow need an activated Flow SIM and government ID, which is an example of how identity documents come into play at the shop counter.

Digicel also lists Travel SIM plans for the Caribbean, such as 10 GB for 30 days at KYD 40 covering 21 countries. Those appear to be roaming products for people based in Cayman rather than visitor plans, so do not assume they are what a visitor should buy.

## eSIM: what Digicel says, and the gaps

Digicel's eSIM FAQ says an eSIM is obtained at Digicel retail stores, lists a charge of 11.00 for a prepaid eSIM and 3.00 for a replacement, and says it needs a phone that is unlocked or locked to Digicel's network. Compatible handsets include iPhone 11 and newer, Samsung Galaxy S20 and newer and Pixel 2 and newer. The same page also says eSIM is currently available for postpaid customers only, so the two statements do not agree, and a visitor should ask in store whether a prepaid eSIM is possible.

A resident information site, Cayman Resident, says prepaid SIMs need no contract or deposit, are sold at provider stores, supermarkets and gas stations, can be bought online and through the providers' apps, and that digital eSIMs are available. It quotes prepaid local calls at 23 to 43 cents per minute depending on time and network, which is why data bundles rather than per-minute calling are the sensible way to use a prepaid line. We could not open Flow's own Cayman pages, so we do not quote its visitor terms.

## 5G arrived in June 2024

The Cayman News Service reported that both Flow and Digicel launched 5G in June 2024, and quoted an economic consultant as saying the operators already held spectrum in the 2300, 2500 and 3500 MHz bands. It also quoted the acting chief executive of the regulator, OfReg, saying planning and preparation were key to the islands being among the first Caribbean nations to bring 5G online.

That article is about availability and regulatory preparation rather than measured speeds, and we found no regulator coverage map for the three islands. A visitor to Seven Mile Beach and George Town can reasonably expect modern service. For Cayman Brac and Little Cayman, we found no official coverage data, so ask your accommodation about reception before depending on a connection for work.

## Entry cards, tickets and the departure slip

The Cayman Islands Department of Tourism's travel information page says visitors must present a passport or another valid document establishing identity and nationality, plus an immigration card and a customs declaration card provided by airline staff. Visitors must have a paid return or onward ticket and may be asked to show sufficient funds. It says to keep the immigration card with your travel documents because it must be handed over on departure.

None of this needs a phone signal. Fill the cards in on the plane and keep them together with your return ticket and the address where you are staying. A phone eSIM is not a substitute for those documents.

## Emergency numbers and the sea

The UK Foreign Office lists 911 for ambulance, fire, police and the police marine unit, and says the diver hyperbaric chamber is also reached through 911. It gives the Royal Cayman Islands Coast Guard as (345) 649 6722 and notes that, as a British Overseas Territory, the islands have no British Embassy, so local authorities provide assistance.

For diving and boating trips, choose a plan with local voice, and tell the operator where you plan to go if your phone will be left on the boat.

## Keeping your home number alongside a local line

Apple's guidance says an iPhone must be unlocked for a local eSIM and that the data line is chosen in Settings, Cellular, with iMessage and FaceTime remaining on the home number. Google says Pixel 3a and later phones support one physical SIM and one eSIM. Samsung describes SIM manager for adding an eSIM. Our Cayman Islands plan page is another way to arrange data before the flight.

Emergency calls: Many travel eSIMs carry data only, and a data-only profile may not place a normal phone call. Keep a voice-capable SIM for emergencies, such as your home SIM or a local plan, and save the local emergency number from this guide.
