A visitor arriving at Budapest Liszt Ferenc Airport can buy a Hungarian data line in the terminal, but the choices differ in whether they include calls, can be refilled and work after the first bundle expires. Magyar Telekom separates its data-only Travel SIM from its Domino prepaid range. One also publishes a prepaid starter with optional data bundles. Decide which functions you need before choosing an eSIM or physical card, then check the particular route beyond Budapest rather than relying on a national 5G label.

## Telekom's visitor eSIM at Budapest Airport

Magyar Telekom says its Travel SIM is available as a physical SIM or eSIM, but buying the eSIM requires a visit to a Telekom store; online eSIM purchase is unavailable. Its listed Airport HUB outlet is landside on the arrivals level of Terminal 2B. At the time of checking, the visitor page offered 20 GB for ten days at 10,000 forints and 100 GB for 30 days at 15,000 forints. The smaller bundle is listed for use in Hungary and the EU. The larger one has a separate EU roaming allowance, so read the current checkout or staff information if the journey continues across a border.

Telekom states that the Travel SIM contains data only: it cannot make ordinary calls or send texts, and it cannot be topped up when the data runs out. The stated validity starts on purchase, so buying early for a later arrival would waste some time. It is therefore suitable for a short data trip, while a visitor needing a Hungarian voice number or repeat refills should examine Domino instead. Do not plan to receive banking verification texts on this data-only line.

The operator restricts Travel SIM contracts to adults with a valid identification document issued outside Hungary. Its accepted examples are a passport, identity card or driving licence. Bring the document into the shop rather than assuming the airport desk can complete the sale from a photo. Telekom says its Travel SIM may access 5G where available with a suitable device and settings; that is an eligibility statement, not a promise about the airport, a Budapest hotel or a rural route.

## Voice-capable prepaid alternatives

Telekom's English Domino page says a foreign customer must enter the contract in person at a Telekom store and present valid identification, such as a passport, national identity card or driving licence. Its Domino Fix starter showed 3 GB and 50 minutes for 990 forints at the time of checking, with a stated availability period of 366 days. Those included minutes distinguish it from Travel SIM. The page also shows other Domino starters that renew or have larger allowances; check whether a recurring option is appropriate for a brief stay before paying.

One's Hungarian Tuti prepaid page displayed a starter SIM at 500 forints when ordered online or bought through a reseller, versus 1,500 forints in a One shop, at the time of checking. It listed an initial 2 GB and 100 minutes for the first 30 days, with an extra 1 GB for online purchase or activation. A separately priced 5 GB domestic data option was shown at 2,290 forints for 30 days. These are different charges: the low starter price is not the total cost of every larger data use case.

One says reseller stock varies by outlet, and reseller cards require activation. Its page does not clearly establish an English-language, passport-based purchase path for every foreign visitor, so ask the chosen shop what identity document it will accept before relying on that option. A Telekom store is the more clearly documented route for a foreign Domino buyer. Check any online delivery address requirement before choosing a remote order when you are only staying in a hotel.

## Budapest 5G says little about a cycle path or train

Hungary's National Media and Infocommunications Authority, NMHH, reported in September 2026 that it had developed mobile measurement equipment for cycle paths and other routes that cannot readily be surveyed by car. It said forest, river valley and sparsely populated sections had been only partly accessible to its earlier car-based method. The announcement describes a new measurement capability, not a published guarantee that any particular cycle route already has uninterrupted data.

NMHH also says mobile availability and quality can vary by provider and route. That matters on the Danube Bend, around Lake Balaton and on journeys away from Budapest: inspect the selected carrier's current coverage map for the exact stops and take offline directions where a change of route would be costly. A handset may show a 5G symbol only where the chosen subscription, compatible radio and local signal all line up. Telekom's Travel SIM page makes its own 5G access conditional on coverage and hardware.

## Buy the right ticket before leaving Terminal 2

Budapest's transport operator BKK says its BudapestGO app can plan journeys and buy the special ticket for the 100E Airport Express between Liszt Ferenc Airport and Deák Ferenc tér. Its guidance expressly excludes the 100E from an ordinary single ticket. The app page says a connected mobile network is needed for its digital ticket. Arrange a usable data connection before depending on an app purchase at the bus stop, and validate the mobile ticket as BKK directs before boarding.

There is also a way to take the 100E without an app or Hungarian SIM. BKK's Pay&GO page says a contactless bank card or compatible phone can purchase and validate the airport bus ticket in one tap at the onboard device, without prior registration. The same system covers Budapest's metro lines, but the airport ticket is valid only on the 100E. Keep the same card or device available for inspection; tapping a different wallet or physical card may not show the purchase to the checker.

## A home EU line may cover the whole visit

Hungary participates in the EU's roam-like-at-home system. The European Commission explains that a qualifying EU home tariff normally applies domestic calls, texts and data allowances to periodic travel in another EU country, subject to its fair-use rules. Check your home operator's message or tariff before buying a separate line for a short Budapest visit. A non-EU home contract can price roaming differently, and an EU unlimited domestic plan may still have a lower fair-use data allowance abroad.

Do not confuse the EU roaming right on a home subscription with the roaming allowance of a newly bought Hungarian product. Telekom's Travel SIM advertises EU use, but the ten-day and 30-day bundles have different cross-border data terms. One labels the extra Tuti data options on its cited page for domestic use. If you are crossing to Austria, Slovakia or Croatia, read the precise roaming allowance of the selected Hungarian bundle before the border, and keep another connection for tickets if the allowance is exhausted.

## Emergency calling and the preflight check

Hungarian police identify 112 as the free emergency number for police, ambulance and disaster response. Their guidance says it can be called from a mobile phone and asks callers to give the location and nature of the incident. Save a street address, station name or trail location when travelling outside familiar streets. Telekom's Travel SIM page says that product cannot make calls or send texts, so it should not be treated as a voice emergency line. Keep a voice-capable SIM or other reliable means of calling available.

Before flying, confirm that the handset is unlocked and supports the eSIM method you intend to buy. Bring the identification document to the Telekom outlet; its visitor eSIM is purchased in person, and its foreign-customer Domino contract is also signed in a store. Check the Terminal 2B outlet's current opening hours separately before relying on an immediate purchase after a late arrival. Keep the first Budapest journey possible without data by using the BKK Pay&GO card option if the Hungarian line is still being installed.

Emergency calls: Many travel eSIMs carry data only, and a data-only profile may not place a normal phone call. Keep a voice-capable SIM for emergencies, such as your home SIM or a local plan, and save the local emergency number from this guide.

## Questions

### Can a visitor buy a Hungarian eSIM at Budapest Airport?

Magyar Telekom lists a Travel SIM outlet at Airport HUB, landside on the Terminal 2B arrivals level. It says an eSIM must be bought in a Telekom store rather than online. Check opening hours and bring valid identification.

### Does Telekom's Travel SIM include a Hungarian calling number?

Telekom describes Travel SIM as data-only and says it cannot make ordinary calls or send texts. Its Domino prepaid range includes voice minutes and is the better documented Telekom option when you need a calling service.

### What ID does a foreign Domino buyer need?

Telekom asks foreign customers to sign a Domino contract in person at a store and bring a valid passport, national identity card or driving licence. Its Travel SIM also requires a valid identification document issued outside Hungary and a buyer aged at least 18.

### Can I refill a Telekom Travel SIM when its data runs out?

No. Telekom says the Travel SIM cannot be topped up after the included data is consumed. Ask about Domino or another prepaid product if you need repeat refills during a longer stay.

### Do I need mobile data to take Budapest's 100E airport bus?

BKK's BudapestGO mobile ticket needs a connected phone, but BKK Pay&GO can buy and validate a 100E ticket with a contactless bank card or compatible device onboard, without an app or registration.

### Will an EU home SIM roam in Hungary?

A qualifying EU home tariff normally follows EU roam-like-at-home rules during periodic travel, subject to fair-use terms. Check the home plan's allowance before buying Hungarian prepaid data, especially for a short Budapest visit.

### What is the emergency number in Hungary?

Call 112 for urgent police, ambulance or disaster-response help. Hungarian police say calls from mobiles are free. A data-only Travel SIM does not provide ordinary calling, so keep a voice-capable option available.
