A Dutch itinerary often starts with a train from Schiphol and may cross into Belgium or Germany within days. That makes the choice between an existing EU roaming allowance and a new Dutch prepaid line more important than any airport sales pitch. Vodafone's current prepaid information gives a concrete local option, while the Dutch regulator explains where network rules leave gaps.

## Vodafone's Dutch prepaid line

Vodafone Netherlands offers both a physical prepaid SIM and a prepaid eSIM. It says the physical SIM can be ordered online or bought in a Vodafone shop, with credit topped up online through a payment card or Dutch payment methods. At the time of checking, Vodafone advertised top-ups from €5, with optional data and calling bundles. This is a flexible route for a visitor who wants a Dutch number for calls or texts as well as data, but check the bundle price and validity on the day of purchase.

The operator says its monthly prepaid bundles range from 2 GB to 10 GB and can be used in the Netherlands and the EU. The page also describes access to its 5G network on prepaid, but that is an operator offering, not proof of 5G at your hotel or on a particular train. When prepaid credit runs out, Vodafone says outgoing calls, texts and internet stop while incoming calls and texts can still arrive. The bundle renews when sufficient credit is available, so a visitor planning a short stay should note the renewal date.

Vodafone's standard prepaid rates are separate from its bundles, and per-megabyte use can make an unbundled data session costly. Activate an appropriate bundle before using the line for navigation or media. If you already have a European home plan, compare its current roaming allowance with the Dutch prepaid bundle before adding a second line.

## How Vodafone prepaid eSIM is issued

A prepaid eSIM is available from Vodafone, but its support instructions are more specific than a generic instant-download claim. For a SIM-to-eSIM change, Vodafone says it can post a prepaid eSIM voucher or supply one in a shop. The voucher contains a QR code and ePIN, and the installed profile is activated in the Vodafone and Ziggo app, by contacting support or in a shop. A traveller flying tomorrow should not assume that the postal voucher route will complete before departure.

Vodafone says the voucher is also needed when reinstalling an accidentally removed profile, and it gives a transfer sequence for a new device. Keep the voucher details secure and do not delete the old eSIM until you have read the operator's transfer steps. For a brand-new prepaid order, check the checkout flow and delivery method before paying; the cited support page chiefly explains activation and replacement, not every possible new-customer delivery route.

An unlocked, eSIM-capable phone is required when combining Vodafone with a different provider. Apple says supported iPhones can keep a home line for voice and messages while assigning mobile data to a local eSIM, but only one mobile data network is used at a time. Review which line is selected for data after arrival and the home line's roaming settings before opening the NS app or map.

## Check your existing EU allowance first

The European Commission includes the Netherlands in the roam-like-at-home area. On an eligible EU or EEA subscription, periodic travel in the country normally uses domestic calls, texts and data terms. Operators can set a fair-use allowance for unlimited or unusually cheap data, and should explain it to the customer. If your trip is Amsterdam, Utrecht and Rotterdam for a few days, check the home plan's allowance before paying for a Dutch number that you may never call from.

Vodafone describes its own prepaid monthly bundles as usable in the Netherlands and the EU. That is useful if your itinerary also includes Brussels or Cologne, but check the exact bundle and roaming terms rather than relying on the word EU on a product page. The Commission also explains that countries outside the EU and EEA are not covered by the general roam-like-at-home requirement; any extension by an operator is a separate commercial choice.

A data-only travel profile and a voice-capable Dutch prepaid line solve different needs. Railway tickets and maps need data; a local phone number may matter for ordinary voice calls or texts. Decide before purchase whether the home number must stay available for sign-in codes, then arrange the two lines accordingly.

## What the Dutch regulator's coverage rule can tell you

The Rijksinspectie Digitale Infrastructuur, or RDI, identifies KPN, Odido and VodafoneZiggo as the Netherlands' three national mobile networks. It says each faces a coverage and speed obligation in every municipality, with exceptions for Natura 2000 areas and outside waters. Its annual checks use continuous downloads from phones in a moving car, and it notes that results are a snapshot of the measured route rather than a promise about every visitor's experience.

RDI explicitly limits the obligation to outdoor coverage. It also says modern insulated buildings, tall structures and vegetation can weaken a signal. This is relevant when a rural holiday park, an old city centre building or a station underpass seems at odds with a broad national coverage claim. Check the chosen provider's own map for the exact address, and ask accommodation staff if reliable indoor data is essential.

The regulator's listed exceptions make it unwise to infer open-water coverage from municipal measurements. If a trip includes a boat or a nature reserve, download route details and tickets before setting out. Coverage rules are useful for comparing the framework operators work under; they cannot replace a location-specific check at the place where you need service.

## From Schiphol Wi-Fi to an NS ticket

Schiphol advertises free Wi-Fi on its Schiphol_Free_Wi-Fi network. The airport says a session lasts four hours and can be renewed by logging in again. That gives arriving passengers a way to retrieve an eSIM voucher, contact accommodation or load a train ticket, but it does not replace mobile data once the train leaves the airport. If your eSIM installation depends on a mailed voucher, have its details accessible before reaching the terminal.

NS says Dutch rail e-tickets can be loaded into its app or printed. A valid e-ticket in the app opens station gates and can be shown to the conductor; the page says a screenshot of a PDF on a phone is not the same as the official app ticket. Keep the ticket available until you have exited at the destination, since a gate may need it again. The ticket is personal and requires valid identification, so carry your passport or accepted identity document on the journey.

The NS app can also be used for train planning, while mobile data helps with disruptions after you leave the airport. Before landing, install the app and decide whether the home line, Dutch prepaid line or travel eSIM will carry that data. A charged phone is part of the ticket plan: NS specifically reminds passengers that they must be able to display a valid ticket when checked.

## Emergency calling and a practical departure check

The Dutch government says 112 is the free number for urgent police, fire or ambulance assistance when every second counts. Keep a voice-capable means of calling if the eSIM selected for data does not include ordinary calls. A data connection may help with maps or messages, but the government guidance describes a phone call to 112, not a universal promise that a data-only eSIM itself can place one.

Before flying, verify that the phone is unlocked and that the chosen eSIM can be installed on it. Record the prepaid or roaming allowance, when it starts and how it renews. If using Vodafone prepaid, ensure the bundle rather than the base rate is active before starting large data use. Keep NS tickets in the supported app or print them, and carry identification for the personal rail ticket.

For a brief Dutch city visit, an existing eligible EU line may be the simplest solution. A Vodafone prepaid number is useful when local voice and texts are wanted or the home plan is unsuitable. For either path, test the chosen data line at Schiphol before beginning a rail journey, then save the accommodation address and onward tickets locally.

Emergency calls: Many travel eSIMs carry data only, and a data-only profile may not place a normal phone call. Keep a voice-capable SIM for emergencies, such as your home SIM or a local plan, and save the local emergency number from this guide.

## Questions

### Can I use my EU mobile plan in the Netherlands?

An eligible EU or EEA home plan normally uses domestic terms during a periodic Dutch visit under roam-like-at-home rules. Check any fair-use data allowance with the home provider.

### Does Vodafone Netherlands sell prepaid eSIM?

Yes. Vodafone says prepaid eSIM is available, and its support page explains voucher-based installation and activation. Check the delivery route before assuming a new profile will arrive instantly.

### Where can I get a Dutch Vodafone prepaid SIM?

Vodafone says physical prepaid SIMs can be ordered online or bought in Vodafone shops, then topped up online or through its app and other channels.

### Is Schiphol airport Wi-Fi free?

Schiphol says its free network is Schiphol_Free_Wi-Fi. A session lasts four hours, after which users can log in again for further free access.

### Can I use a phone screenshot as an NS rail ticket?

NS says to show the e-ticket in its app or as a printout; a screenshot of a PDF displayed on a phone is not accepted as the app ticket.

### Does Dutch mobile coverage law guarantee an indoor signal?

No. RDI says the mobile coverage and speed obligation applies outdoors, and notes that insulation, buildings and vegetation can weaken reception.

### What is the Dutch emergency number?

Call 112 for urgent police, fire or ambulance help. Keep a voice-capable line available if the eSIM you use for data does not include normal voice calling.
