A journey through Tanzania may combine Dar es Salaam, Zanzibar, Arusha and long stretches between towns. Local mobile service can be useful, but a visitor line has a registration process tied to travel documents, and national coverage figures hide route-level gaps. Choose a bundle for the journey you will actually take and leave time for identity checks if buying a Tanzanian number after arrival.

## Bring travel documents for a Tanzanian SIM

Tanzania's communications regulator TCRA published detailed visitor SIM registration procedures. They direct visitor registrations to operator customer centres, provider shops or agents' shops, require travel-document checks and describe verification with Immigration records. The guidance says a registered visitor SIM remains active for the period the visitor is permitted to stay. This is a material difference from buying a generic data profile online: a local Tanzanian number involves a named registration process, and it should be completed in the visitor's own name.

TCRA's 2021 guide also describes alternate verification where fingerprints were not taken at entry or Immigration data are unavailable. The authority has since published 2025 SIM registration regulations, so a visitor should allow for the current counter procedure rather than treating every step in the older guide as immutable. Vodacom's own registration supplement says short-stay visitors bring a passport to a shop or registration agent and have biometrics checked against government records. Carry the original passport and ask the agent to confirm successful activation before leaving.

TCRA says visitors can dial *106# to check SIMs registered against their travel document. Keep the receipt and line number until this check and a test call succeed.

## Compare a physical SIM with an operator eSIM

Vodacom's customer guide says a new customer can buy a physical SIM at Vodacom shops or registration agents across Tanzania. It describes prepaid service as the option without a long contract. The operator's privacy supplement makes clear that buying the card is only the first step: biometric registration is needed before the service is activated. If you are landing late in Dar es Salaam or continuing directly to Arusha, identify a verified shop opening time before making the new SIM your only connection plan.

Yas Tanzania publishes an eSIM guide that sends customers to a Yas shop or authorised dealer with identity documents and a compatible phone. It describes a QR-code installation and says bundle purchase follows separately through its app or short code. The guide's approximate setup-time and fee statements are marketing estimates, so check the actual charge and process at the shop. A QR profile does not bypass TCRA's identity requirement for a local number.

Airtel's tariff page separates voice-only and combination bundles. Decide whether you need a Tanzanian voice number for calls or just internet for navigation and messaging. Keep your home line active if you need bank texts, and set the data line deliberately after the local profile is installed. Do not assume an eSIM purchase includes a particular allowance until the named tariff is visible.

## Read a bundle's data column and its expiry

Airtel Tanzania's local tariff table shows why checking the plan shape matters. Its Yatosha Janja Lao voice bundles have separate minutes and texts, while its Combo table adds mobile data. The Combo entries visible at the time of checking included a seven-day 750 MB option for TSh 2,000 and a 30-day 4,096 MB option for TSh 10,000. These are operator-published tax-inclusive prices, subject to change; inspect the current purchase screen before paying and do not mistake a voice-heavy bundle for a large internet pack.

Airtel says these listed bundles are for prepaid customers and can be bought with airtime or Airtel Money. It also says use is within Tanzania and offers a balance check through *149*99#. Check that your plan will last until the next place where you can top up. A map download, video call or cloud backup can use a modest allowance quickly, so choose the data amount based on expected use rather than the volume of included minutes.

Before a safari transfer or ferry connection, check the remaining balance and disable background updates if the allowance is low. Airtel's terms describe a choice between buying a fresh data bundle and standard billing when benefits run out.

## Interpret TCRA coverage before a safari or island journey

TCRA's published account of its June 2025 statistics said 3G and 4G each covered about 75% of Tanzania's land area, while 5G covered about 26%. These are dated national regulator figures, not a current guarantee for a specific road, national park, beach or hotel. In the same account TCRA described 5G's population reach as much smaller than blanket national service. Avoid making a 5G promise the deciding factor for a route whose most important sections are outside major settlements.

TCRA's sector report also identifies Vodacom, Yas, Airtel, Halotel and TTCL as mobile operators. That tells a traveller which networks to investigate but does not rank the signal on a drive from Arusha towards a park gate or on a less populated part of Zanzibar. Ask the operator or accommodation about the exact route and download offline maps, tickets and contact details before leaving a connected town. A phone may have a signal in the starting city and still lose data on the road.

Airtel's tariff terms say its local bundles are usable anywhere within Tanzania, but that refers to the geographic validity of the product, not a promise of radio coverage everywhere. The same distinction matters for any operator: a nationally valid package can be useless where there is no compatible cell. Check coverage and plan validity independently.

## Treat East African roaming as a separate purchase decision

TCRA says a harmonised East African Community roaming framework reduced the average cost of voice calls from Tanzania to other EAC countries in its 2025 reporting period. That is a regulator observation about a regional framework, not a statement that every Tanzanian prepaid data bundle can be used without extra charge across the region. A traveller moving on to Kenya, Rwanda or Uganda still needs the purchased line's country list and data terms before crossing.

Yas's roaming page illustrates the product-level distinction. It lists particular Kenya and Rwanda partner networks with separate roaming bundles, their own allowances and validity. Those are Yas offers for its own customers, not a universal EAC tariff. A Tanzanian Airtel local bundle, meanwhile, says its benefits are usable within Tanzania. Do not rely on that domestic allowance for an onward East African trip without a separate roaming confirmation.

For a foreign home SIM, check the provider's Tanzania roaming charge before enabling data. With two active lines, choose the intended data line and inspect automatic switching after a border crossing.

## Keep a calling route as well as a data route

TCRA's numbering information identifies 112 as a police emergency short code in Tanzania. Save it and keep a working voice-capable line if you may need to call from Dar es Salaam, Zanzibar or an inland road. The cited regulator page does not state whether a specific data-only eSIM can make emergency calls, so do not treat an internet allowance as proof that it can. Share your route and expected arrival time with someone before a long transfer, and retain an offline location reference.

Before the flight, check the handset's unlock status and eSIM support if buying a digital profile. Yas says its shop can provide a QR code for installation; protect that code as carefully as a physical SIM. If buying a Vodacom or other local line, leave time for the passport and biometric step, then test data, calls and the account balance while still at the counter. The TCRA visitor guide's *106# check can help verify that the new line is registered to the correct travel document.

A dual-line phone can preserve a home number for verification texts while the Tanzanian line supplies data. Save the purchased tariff offline for resolving a failed top-up.

Emergency calls: Many travel eSIMs carry data only, and a data-only profile may not place a normal phone call. Keep a voice-capable SIM for emergencies, such as your home SIM or a local plan, and save the local emergency number from this guide.

## Questions

### Can a tourist activate a Tanzanian local SIM without identification?

TCRA's visitor guidance describes registration through a provider or agent with travel-document and Immigration checks. Vodacom's visitor information says to bring a passport for biometric registration.

### Will a visitor SIM remain active indefinitely?

TCRA's visitor procedures say the line is active for the period the visitor is permitted to stay. Check the current registration conditions at the operator counter because newer regulations have also been published.

### Where does Yas say to obtain a local eSIM?

Yas directs customers to its shop or an authorised dealer with identity documents and a compatible phone. The operator describes a QR-code installation after registration.

### Does an Airtel voice bundle necessarily contain data?

No. Airtel's tariff page separates voice-oriented Yatosha entries from Combo entries with a stated data amount. Read the data column before buying.

### Does 5G cover the whole safari route?

TCRA's June 2025 account put 5G at about 26% geographic coverage. That national figure cannot verify a particular park road or lodge; check the route and save offline maps.

### Do Tanzanian bundles automatically roam in East Africa?

No automatic data entitlement follows from TCRA's regional voice-roaming framework. Check the exact pack: Yas lists separate Kenya and Rwanda roaming products, while Airtel labels its local bundles for Tanzania.

### What police emergency short code should I save?

TCRA identifies 112 as a police emergency code. Keep a voice-capable calling route; its numbering FAQ does not confirm emergency calls from a data-only eSIM.
