A Thai tourist SIM can provide a local number as well as data, but registration is part of the purchase. AIS and True/dtac publish tourist packages, sell eSIMs and list airport or shop collection points. The choice depends on trip length, whether outgoing calls matter and how you will complete passport verification. Package duration and the legal lifetime of a tourist number are different things.

## AIS offers for a short stay or a longer circuit

AIS lists Lucky Tourist SIM packages for one, five, eight, 15, 30 and 60 days. At the time of checking, its eight-day offer was 499 baht, its 15-day offer 699 baht and its 30-day offer 1,199 baht. AIS advertises unlimited data at maximum available speed on the multi-day offers, free calls within AIS and 100 baht of credit for calls to other Thai networks and certain international calls. These are the operator's package claims; check the checkout terms and activation message for the allowance attached to the actual SIM.

The AIS page has a Buy eSIM route beside several packages and a Find AIS Shop route beside the 60-day option. This matters for a journey from Bangkok to Chiang Mai and then the islands: the 60-day package is listed at 1,599 baht, but its displayed purchase route is a shop rather than the eSIM button shown for shorter offers. AIS says the SIM must be registered before use. Keep your passport available for the identity step even when paying online.

AIS also displays a one-day 1 GB package capped at 10 Mbps for 49 baht at the time of checking. It charges calls separately, unlike the multi-day offers.

## True and dtac: check voice terms before choosing data-only

True/dtac publishes Thailand Tourist Infinite SIM packages for eight, 15 and 30 days and a separate data-only option. Its FAQ showed an eight-day Happy Tourist Infinite SIM at 449 baht at the time of checking. The Infinite terms advertise mobile data on 5G, 4G and older networks at the maximum available speed, access to named True or dtac Wi-Fi networks and calls to Thai numbers for up to 15 minutes per call. Calls outside included terms can consume credit; unlimited data does not mean every call is free.

The data-only terms require careful reading. True/dtac says ordinary outgoing calls and outgoing SMS or MMS are disabled, although it lists exceptions for its call centres and emergency numbers 191, 1669 and 112. Receiving calls and messages is supported. That statement concerns this particular operator product; it does not establish that every travel data eSIM can make an emergency call. If local voice or SMS verification matters, choose a package whose own terms include those functions.

True/dtac lists nationwide service centres, airport locations advertised as open around the clock and its online store as tourist sales routes. Its top-up FAQ names True shops and 7-Eleven, with *123# for balance and validity. Added credit can pay for eligible use, but the operator says it does not extend an expired tourist SIM.

## The NBTC registration rule at the counter

Thailand's National Broadcasting and Telecommunications Commission says a foreign person may register no more than three mobile numbers per mobile provider and specifies a passport for identity confirmation. Bring the passport when buying a local line. The rule is per provider, which matters if several family numbers would be registered under one traveller's identity. The regulator's own page is a firmer basis for the limit than an older third-party account of the rule.

The NBTC says a foreign tourist SIM's service period must not exceed 60 days. Adding credit cannot extend that period; continued use requires identity confirmation with the provider again. True/dtac repeats the 60-day ceiling and asks an expired-number holder to re-identify with a passport at a shop or contact its call centre. AIS gives a different route: tourists wanting to use its SIM beyond 60 days can send their passport number by free SMS to 4444161 and complete linked verification, or visit an AIS shop. Follow the issuing operator's instructions.

AIS says a registered number must be activated within 60 days or identity verification is needed again. If buying before departure, distinguish this deadline from package duration after activation.

## Arriving at Bangkok, Phuket or Chiang Mai

AIS lists tourist SIM sales points throughout Suvarnabhumi Airport, including second-floor baggage claim and exit locations. It also lists Don Mueang, Chiang Mai, Chiang Rai, Samui, Hat Yai and Phuket airports. Check its current list for your actual terminal: an international arrival at Suvarnabhumi and a domestic connection at Don Mueang are different journeys. AIS also lists its own shops and Telewiz shops nationwide for travellers who prefer to leave the terminal first.

True/dtac says its airport locations operate 24 hours. For a late arrival, verify the particular desk or online collection arrangement before flying. Have the passport ready and keep a working way to receive eSIM instructions. Complete activation and test a map or message before leaving the airport, particularly if the next leg is a taxi or island transfer.

Grab's September 2026 airport information places its designated Suvarnabhumi pick-up zone on Level 1 at Gate 4 and describes an in-app PIN system. Its Thailand transport page says rides can be paid by cash, card or GrabPay and driver contact works through in-app chat. Arrange the app and payment method before relying on it for the first ride.

## Coverage beyond the city and across the border

AIS advertises 5G availability across all 77 Thai provinces, but its coverage page warns that radio conditions, the handset, terrain, weather and indoor location affect reception. A provincial claim is not a signal guarantee on a ferry, mountain road or beach. Check the carrier map for the places on your route and save tickets, hotel addresses and offline maps before a long transfer. Test the connection in Bangkok or Chiang Mai before setting out for a less connected stop.

True/dtac's tourist conditions say package benefits apply within Thailand and prepaid international roaming is not included. Onward travel to Laos, Cambodia or Malaysia therefore needs a separate roaming arrangement or local data product. Do not assume a 30-day Thai allowance follows you across a border because days remain. Keep the home SIM available if you need bank texts, and choose the intended data line deliberately in your phone's mobile settings.

AIS and True/dtac advertise access to their own Wi-Fi networks with relevant tourist packages. Check the named network and sign-in instructions before relying on it in a station or shopping centre.

## Emergency calls and the setup before landing

Thailand's Tourist Police publish 1155 as their hotline. True/dtac's data-only tourist terms specifically allow outgoing calls to 191, 1669 and 112 despite disabling ordinary outgoing calls. Save those numbers, your accommodation address and an emergency contact before departure. A data eSIM issued by another provider may have different voice capability, so check its own terms and keep another way to call if needed. A messaging app alone is not proof that a cellular emergency call will work.

Before flying, check that the handset is unlocked and supports the SIM or eSIM you intend to buy. Save installation details somewhere accessible without a connection. On a dual-SIM phone, select the Thai line for data after activation and leave the home line available for important texts if your home provider permits it; check home roaming charges first. After landing, complete passport registration, confirm the activation message, then test data and included calls or SMS while seller help is close.

Our Thailand plan page provides another data option to compare before departure. A local tourist number remains useful where Thai calls or SMS are part of the journey, provided the passport and re-identification rules fit your stay.

Emergency calls: Many travel eSIMs carry data only, and a data-only profile may not place a normal phone call. Keep a voice-capable SIM for emergencies, such as your home SIM or a local plan, and save the local emergency number from this guide.

## Questions

### Do visitors need a passport for a Thai local SIM?

The NBTC specifies passport identity confirmation for foreign mobile registration. Bring it for a local tourist SIM or eSIM purchase, including at an airport desk.

### How many Thai numbers may one foreign traveller register?

The NBTC says no more than three mobile numbers per person per mobile provider. Ask the seller how a household's lines will be registered.

### Can topping up keep a tourist SIM working past 60 days?

No. The NBTC says top-ups cannot extend the tourist SIM's maximum 60-day service period. Continued use requires renewed identity confirmation with the issuing provider.

### Is there an AIS tourist eSIM?

AIS displays a Buy eSIM option beside several Lucky Tourist packages, including the eight, 15 and 30-day offers. Its 60-day offer displayed a shop route when checked.

### Where can a visitor buy a SIM after landing?

AIS lists sales points at Suvarnabhumi, Don Mueang, Chiang Mai, Phuket and other airports, plus AIS and Telewiz shops. True/dtac advertises nationwide shops and 24-hour airport locations.

### Can a True/dtac data-only tourist SIM call for help?

Its terms disable ordinary outgoing calls but name exceptions for emergency numbers 191, 1669 and 112. Other data-only eSIMs may work differently, so check their own terms.

### Will a Thai tourist package work in a neighbouring country?

True/dtac says its tourist benefits are valid within Thailand and prepaid international roaming is not included. Arrange a separate connection for travel onward across the border.
