The US Virgin Islands need a little more mobile planning than their US territory status suggests. St Thomas and St Croix have airports, while St John is reached by boat, and an official tourism guide warns of weak signal in St John's hills. One Communications publishes short prepaid bundles locally; a US mainland line may instead use domestic roaming, depending on its provider and plan.

## Choose a local prepaid bundle by the length of the trip

One Communications publishes no-credit-check prepaid bundles for the US Virgin Islands. At the time of checking, its one-day plan was $2, three days $5, seven days $10, 14 days $15 and 30 days $30. The operator also listed a 90-day option for $80. These are published operator prices and may change before arrival. The page describes unlimited nationwide data, local talk and text in the US Virgin Islands, mainland US, British Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico while on the One network, plus an international-text allowance. A short stay on St Thomas may suit a short pack; a St Croix work visit or extended stay on St John merits comparing the longer validity before buying.

Read the speed qualification carefully. One says every unlimited prepaid bundle has a high-speed data allowance and reduces data to a maximum of 256 Kbps when that allowance is exhausted, although its public plan page does not show the allowance for each bundle in the visible table. Ask staff to state the specific high-speed threshold before purchasing. One says *663# adds a pack from an existing line. That code does not establish that a new visitor can self-activate without a SIM, so arrange the line first and ask the shop to demonstrate a working data session.

## Use an island store and confirm the SIM format

One's current store locator lists 26A Annas Retreat on St Thomas, 7G and 7H Estate Diamond on Pepper Tree Road near Christiansted on St Croix, and 1AA Cruz Bay Quarter on St John. It also lists agents, including one at Tutu Park Mall on St Thomas. Hours differ, with the St John store listed on weekdays, so check the locator again before making a special journey. None of those store listings proves a SIM counter exists at Cyril E. King or Henry E. Rohlsen airport; budget a route from the airport to a confirmed shop if you need a physical local line.

The One prepaid page does not give a clear public rule for visitor identification or promise a newly issued prepaid eSIM. Contact One with your handset model and ask what identification, SIM format and activation method are required for a visitor. Bring an unlocked phone and a form of identity that the operator confirms it accepts. One's quick top-up form asks for the number to top up and an amount between $1 and $200, but that does not guarantee a particular foreign card will be accepted at checkout. Ask how to pay for a renewal if travelling between islands.

## Check what a mainland US plan really includes

A US number does not establish identical service on every island or on a ferry. Verizon's support page calls a connection to a partner network in the US Virgin Islands domestic roaming and directs customers to check the coverage map for a specific address. Ask your provider whether your exact line includes USVI data, calls and messages, whether data roaming must be enabled, and what happens on partner networks. If using a non-US home line, ask specifically for the US Virgin Islands; a generic United States inclusion may be ambiguous.

The neighbouring British Virgin Islands are a different jurisdiction. One's prepaid terms include some USVI, mainland US, Puerto Rico and BVI calling while on its network, but that is not proof that your phone can roam for data after crossing to Tortola. Likewise, a mainland carrier's domestic USVI arrangement does not define its BVI price. Check the provider's country list before a day trip, and watch the connected network on a ferry or cruise.

## Download St John maps before leaving St Thomas

The US Virgin Islands tourism site says St John has no airport: most arrivals fly to Cyril E. King Airport on St Thomas, then continue by ferry or water taxi from Red Hook, Charlotte Amalie or Crown Bay to Cruz Bay. Save the dock name, sailing details and accommodation directions while connected. The tourism board also warns that mobile coverage can be patchy in St John's hilly and remote areas, causing GPS navigation to drop unexpectedly. Download an offline island map before visiting beaches or driving beyond Cruz Bay, and keep a copy of the car rental company's breakdown number.

For a closer check than a territory-wide marketing claim, use the US Federal Communications Commission's mobile broadband map. The FCC explains that its 3G, 4G and 5G layers are provider-reported models for outdoor or in-vehicle connections, not an indoor-service guarantee. Compare the specific approach road, lodging area and ferry terminal for St Thomas, St Croix and St John. Even if a map shows service on land, do not assume coverage mid-channel. Wi-Fi at accommodation may help with messages, but confirm its availability with the property itself and keep offline directions for the next journey.

## Keep the arrival transfer usable without data

The Virgin Islands Port Authority names Cyril E. King Airport on St Thomas and Henry E. Rohlsen Airport on St Croix and lists airport taxi associations for each. It advises travellers to confirm the taxi rate before entering. Save the relevant association number and your destination address before landing, particularly if you are buying a local SIM later in town. Airport shop lists should not be read as a promise of mobile SIM sales, and the Port Authority's ground-transport page does not establish public Wi-Fi in either terminal. Plan for an arrival period without data rather than relying on an unconfirmed airport hotspot.

## Set up an eSIM and home number deliberately

If buying a data eSIM for the islands, verify that its destination list explicitly names the US Virgin Islands, not only the United States or Puerto Rico. Apple says an iPhone must be unlocked to use another carrier, and its settings show No SIM Restrictions next to Carrier Lock when unlocked. On compatible models, a home line and travel eSIM can remain active together, with the data line selected manually.

Keeping a home number active can preserve access to ordinary messages, but Apple warns that the home line may still incur roaming fees. Turn off data switching or home-line data roaming where appropriate and check the billable status of incoming calls. A data-only profile is for internet access and cannot be assumed to provide a USVI number, SMS or normal voice calls. The local One prepaid bundles described above include voice and texts; if those matter for ferry operators or taxis, ask One about SIM issuance before choosing a data-only option.

## Know when 911 texting can help

The territorial emergency agency, VITEMA, says visitors can call 911 in an emergency and that Text-to-911 is available when speaking is impossible or unsafe. It recommends calling whenever possible because a voice conversation gives dispatchers information faster. For a text, send your exact location and whether you need police, fire or medical help, then stay available for follow-up. Text-to-911 uses ordinary SMS on an active cellular plan with texting; the agency says messaging apps such as WhatsApp cannot be used to text 911 and that the service may not work on a Wi-Fi-only device.

Emergency calls: Many travel eSIMs carry data only, and a data-only profile may not place a normal phone call. Keep a voice-capable SIM for emergencies, such as your home SIM or a local plan, and save the local emergency number from this guide.

## Questions

### Will my mainland US mobile plan work in the US Virgin Islands?

It depends on the carrier and the exact plan. Verizon describes partner connections there as domestic roaming, but that is its own arrangement. Check your provider's USVI coverage, roaming allowance and data settings before leaving.

### What does a One prepaid plan cost?

At the time of checking, One listed plans from $2 for one day to $80 for 90 days, including $10 for seven days and $30 for 30 days. Ask about the high-speed data allowance and any other charges before buying.

### Can I buy a SIM at St Thomas airport?

The Port Authority's airport information does not confirm an on-site SIM seller. One publishes stores on St Thomas, St Croix and St John; check their current opening times and plan transport to a verified outlet.

### Does St John have mobile coverage everywhere?

No guarantee is warranted. The official tourism site warns of patchy coverage in hilly and remote parts of St John. Download an offline map and check the FCC's provider-reported mobile map for your route.

### Will a USVI plan cover a trip to the British Virgin Islands?

Do not infer data roaming from included BVI calling. The British Virgin Islands are a separate jurisdiction; ask your provider whether the precise plan includes roaming there before taking a ferry.

### Can I keep my normal number with a travel eSIM?

Many compatible unlocked phones can run a home line and a travel eSIM together. Select the travel profile for data and check charges on the home line, which can still roam.

### Can I text 911 in the US Virgin Islands?

VITEMA says Text-to-911 is available across the territory when a voice call is impossible or unsafe, but a voice call is preferred. It requires an active cellular plan with text messaging and does not work through messaging apps.
