Register the local number with the original document
Cameroon's Telecommunications Regulatory Agency publishes the 2015 decree governing identification of subscribers and terminal equipment. MTN's own identification help says all mobile users in the country must provide valid ID for service. For a foreign visitor it lists a valid passport or residence card; it also lists a refugee card for refugees. MTN says identification is free at its agencies, kiosks and partner shops, as well as through a digital channel. A photocopy alone is not accepted, so carry the original passport when requesting a line.
MTN warns that an expired document or incorrectly entered information can suspend a line. After registration, *293# or STATUS to 8758 checks identification status without charge. Test it before leaving the counter. An eSIM QR code and a data purchase are separate from subscriber registration.
The MTN store list includes branches in Yaoundé's Warda, Bastos and Hilton areas and in Ngaoundéré. Check the chosen shop's hours and foreign-registration service. Orange says its eSIMs are available in shops and airports, but does not set out the foreign ID list; confirm requirements before paying.
Orange's eSIM can be a new number, with a single-use QR code
Orange Cameroon says a customer without an existing Orange number may acquire a new one as an eSIM. Its instructions direct customers to an agency, and it says eSIMs are available in all Orange shops and at airports. That makes a counter visit a realistic arrival path, but the page does not identify each airport counter's hours or promise remote pre-flight issuance. Keep an offline onward address and a second connection until the Orange profile attaches to the network.
Orange says its eSIM voucher QR code is for one use. If the profile is deleted or the handset lost, a customer needs a new QR code from a dedicated shop; moving it to another phone also requires a store visit. Scan with an internet connection, then check calls, texts and data before leaving. Preserve the receipt without making the QR code public.
The operator says the local eSIM provides calls, SMS and internet like a physical SIM. This is useful if a visitor needs a Cameroonian voice number alongside a home SIM. Orange's statement about its own eSIM does not mean that a separate data-only travel eSIM has the same calling features. On a dual-SIM phone, label both profiles and set the intended line for data and ordinary calls.
Check MTN's eSIM eligibility and daily data clock
MTN says its eSIM is available to customers with a compatible device and gives QR-code installation steps for iOS and Android. The public page does not publish a distinct tourist eSIM price or promise that a new foreign user can finish every registration step remotely. Arrange the MTN line and ID check first; then have the operator issue the eSIM details and test network attachment while support is nearby.
MTN's Giga Surf table describes daily deposits over three, seven, fifteen or thirty days, rather than one unrestricted pot. At the time of checking, its seven-day table listed 300 MB per day for 950 CFA francs and 1 GB per day for 2,700 CFA francs. Its thirty-day table listed 300 MB per day for 3,750 CFA francs. Check the live *157# or *123# purchase menu, because daily allowance, package length and total spend must all suit the trip. A video-heavy day cannot automatically borrow a later day's deposit.
MTN lists Wanda Net as a separate thirty-day offer. Its internet page also describes classic data and streaming menus. Compare the exact offer name before paying, and check the unused-data rule in the current terms.
Choose Orange's 24-hour or 30-day allowance deliberately
Orange's 24-hour mobile internet page lists 100 MB for 100 CFA francs, 250 MB for 250 CFA francs, 600 MB for 500 CFA francs and 2 GB for 1,000 CFA francs on its price cards at the time of checking, with an individual #145# activation code for each. The descriptive text on the same page says 'from' 200 CFA francs for the 250 MB pack and 'from' 400 CFA francs for the 600 MB pack, so the page is not consistent; verify the actual charge in the live purchase flow. A one-day pack can be useful for a short stop in Douala, but it needs renewal for a longer journey.
For a month, Orange's separate page lists 1.2 GB for 2,000 CFA francs and 3 GB for 4,000 CFA francs at the time of checking, each with a stated thirty-day validity. It also advertises a night-labelled 3 GB package and a daily-allocation format. Read those labels carefully: thirty days of calendar validity do not turn a night allowance into daytime data, and a daily amount is different from a single monthly pot.
An Orange eSIM can carry the local number alongside a home SIM on a compatible phone. Check the activated bundle's balance and expiry before leaving a shop. Check the home line's Cameroon roaming charge and the handset's selected data line.
Treat city coverage and road coverage separately
Cameroon's regulator says complaints about dropped calls and unstable data have affected Yaoundé and Douala as well as northern regions. Its 2025 quality campaign tested voice, SMS and 3G/4G data on the Yaoundé–Nanga Eboko–Bertoua and Yaoundé–Abong Mbang–Bertoua roads, then inspected the route from Bertoua through Garoua Boulai and Meiganga to Ngaoundéré. The agency reported variable quality in Bertoua. That is a reason to check the exact journey, not a ranking of every operator.
Orange publishes a map intended to show network technology by area, but its page does not provide a textual street-level result. Compare it with overnight addresses and ask hosts about indoor reception. The regulator's 2024 internet market figures do not establish signal between towns or inside a hotel.
The UK Foreign Office warns that coverage is limited when travelling between cities and points to the Yaoundé–Douala road as a particular road-safety concern. It advises against travel to some parts of Cameroon and against all but essential travel to others. Check the current regional advice for the route before departure, keep tickets and maps offline, and agree on a meeting plan that still works when neither mobile line has signal.
Keep payment options and emergency calling distinct
Orange Money Cameroon says its customers can pay a merchant by QR code in the Orange Money Africa app or by dialling #150*47# with the merchant's code. Its page says the merchant name appears before confirmation. This is a local wallet service, not an automatic feature of every Orange SIM or travel eSIM. A visitor who has not opened and funded an eligible wallet should retain another payment method when using taxis or small shops.
The UK Foreign Office lists 112 for an ambulance, 119 for fire and 117 for police in Cameroon. Save the numbers with the next accommodation address. A local Orange eSIM is described by Orange as supporting ordinary calls and SMS; MTN also describes its eSIM as equivalent to a SIM. Retain a voice-capable line, and check which profile the handset uses for calls.
For an arrival through Douala or Yaoundé, confirm an operator outlet and its hours if a local number is essential. Orange says eSIMs are available at airports but does not identify a counter. The MTN directory gives city store addresses. Have the passport, a compatible phone and the next address offline before seeking registration.
