Good to know

  • Apple's newest iPads (iPad A16, iPad Air M2 and later, iPad Pro M4 and later, iPad mini A17 Pro) have no physical SIM slot in their Wi-Fi + Cellular versions: they use eSIM only. In mainland China only iPad models that Apple lists for eSIM there can activate a cellular plan by eSIM. Source: Apple Support, checked 2026-09-30.

Apple iPad and eSIM: common questions

Does my iPad support eSIM?
29 Apple iPad models are on our eSIM compatibility list; find yours in the list above. If it is not there, dial *#06# on the device: if an EID number appears, it has an eSIM chip. Some models sold in certain regions ship without eSIM even when the same model supports it elsewhere, so check the exact model you own.
Does my iPad need to be unlocked to use a travel eSIM?
Yes. A device locked to a carrier may refuse an eSIM from another provider. A device bought unlocked is not affected, and the carrier that sold a locked device can unlock it.
How do I install an eSIM on my iPad?
Install the eSIM while you have Wi-Fi by scanning the QR code from the order email, or by entering the details by hand. The iPhone setup guide shows each step.
Can I keep my number while I use a travel eSIM on my iPad?
Yes, on devices that support two lines at once: your own SIM keeps your number for calls and texts while the travel eSIM carries the mobile data.
