Good to know

  • Apple lists every iPhone from the XS, XS Max and XR onward as eSIM-capable. In mainland China only the iPhone 18 Pro, iPhone 18 Pro Max, iPhone 17e and iPhone Air support eSIM. Some models sold in Hong Kong and Macao have two physical SIM slots instead. Source: Apple Support, checked 2026-09-30.

Apple iPhone and eSIM: common questions

Does my iPhone support eSIM?
37 Apple iPhone models are on our eSIM compatibility list; find yours in the list above. If it is not there, dial *#06# on the device: if an EID number appears, it has an eSIM chip. Some models sold in certain regions ship without eSIM even when the same model supports it elsewhere, so check the exact model you own.
Does my iPhone need to be unlocked to use a travel eSIM?
Yes. A device locked to a carrier may refuse an eSIM from another provider. A device bought unlocked is not affected, and the carrier that sold a locked device can unlock it.
How do I install an eSIM on my iPhone?
Install the eSIM while you have Wi-Fi by scanning the QR code from the order email, or by entering the details by hand. The iPhone setup guide shows each step.
Can I keep my number while I use a travel eSIM on my iPhone?
Yes, on devices that support two lines at once: your own SIM keeps your number for calls and texts while the travel eSIM carries the mobile data.
