Take a passport to a Tigo agency for a new line
Tigo sells its prepaid Tigo Chip with a digital activation portal. The standard web process asks for a Honduran identity document, scans it and performs facial verification. Tigo's separate visitor answer says that this portal cannot currently register passports or residence documents. A foreign buyer who has already purchased a chip is directed to a Tigo agency, where an agent can activate the new prepaid line without an extra activation charge. Buying the plastic chip and activating the number are therefore separate steps for a visitor.
Do not rely on completing Tigo's domestic self-service process with a foreign passport after landing. Locate an agency that fits the first day's route and check its opening hours. Bring the passport, chip and an unlocked phone. Retain airport Wi-Fi or a working roaming line until activation is complete, then test a call and mobile-data page before travelling away from an agency.
Separate a new Claro eSIM order from a Tigo conversion
Claro advertises eSIM for prepaid and postpaid service in Honduras. Its online-shop instructions describe selecting an eligible handset, choosing eSIM as the SIM type, supplying order and delivery details and receiving a QR code by email. The illustrated prepaid route is part of a handset order; the page does not prove that a visitor can buy a stand-alone prepaid eSIM remotely without a phone. Ask Claro how a passport holder can obtain a new local number, which documents it needs and whether a shop can issue only an eSIM profile.
Tigo's eSIM help describes a different transaction: moving an existing prepaid or postpaid Tigo line from a physical SIM to eSIM through its Liza assistant. The detailed process starts in WhatsApp, checks the customer with an SMS code and then provides a QR code. That is useful if a traveller has already activated a Tigo number and wants the physical slot for another line. It is not evidence that an unregistered visitor can obtain a brand-new Tigo eSIM without the agency step.
Keep Wi-Fi and the registered number working during a conversion because the verification message and QR must still be accessible. Check that the phone supports eSIM and is unlocked before departure. If retaining a home number for banking messages, label the two profiles and choose the Honduran line for data only after it has attached to the network. Confirm the home operator's roaming settings before leaving that line enabled for calls or texts.
Read the ordinary data allowance and expiry
Tigo's published point-of-sale list separates Super Recargas, internet-only packages, voice and messaging. At the time of checking it showed a L 70 three-day Super Recarga with 7 GB, calls and WhatsApp, and a L 58 three-day internet package with 1 GB. The advertised components differ, so compare the ordinary data that mapping, accommodation websites and uploads can use; a named social-app benefit is not a substitute for that balance. Tigo's list is an operator tariff, and a counter can confirm the live offer before payment.
Claro's prepaid page describes Superpacks and recharge routes without a contract, including online purchase, its app and authorised points. Its welcome page says that unused gigabytes can be added to a new pack if another recharge is made before the previous pack expires. That condition makes the expiry time important on a longer trip: topping up after a ferry or bus day may forfeit the intended rollover. Check the exact current pack and renewal rule in the Claro account or at a shop.
For island travel, confirm a way to top up before taking the ferry rather than relying on an unverified counter at the destination.
Plan for uneven coverage between departments
CONATEL, Honduras's telecommunications regulator, publishes annual sector reports whose tables break 4G coverage down by department. The figures differ between places such as the Bay Islands and the remote departments in the east, so a national headline number is not a promise for a particular Roatán beach, a hotel room or a road in Olancho. Check the operator's coverage map for each place on the route.
A city transfer and a journey through rural country need different backup plans. Ask accommodation about reception on the property if work access matters, and download maps and tickets while connected.
Use Palmerola Wi-Fi before the Tegucigalpa transfer
Palmerola International Airport says free Wi-Fi is available across its terminal on its passenger network, with a published 24-hour connection period. That is a documented way to retrieve a QR email, find an agency or message accommodation after landing. The airport's own transport page describes buses and minibuses between Palmerola and Tegucigalpa, with bookings recommended in advance. Save the booking confirmation and destination address locally before leaving the terminal.
Palmerola lies outside Tegucigalpa, so activation time must fit around a transfer rather than an assumed city-centre arrival. The airport's FAQ describes the road connection via CA-5. If a first-day plan depends on a Tigo agency, verify which branch can process a foreign passport and when it closes before booking onward transport. An eSIM QR can be downloaded over airport Wi-Fi, but a QR alone does not replace a new line's identity checks.
For arrival with Claro, the operator's page says a purchased eSIM QR is sent by email; have that mailbox accessible before leaving Wi-Fi. For arrival with a Tigo physical chip, retain the agency address and a means of reaching it if data is not yet active. Avoid assuming a SIM counter is inside the terminal: the airport pages used here confirm Wi-Fi and transport, not an operator shop.
Check the roaming zone and retain a voice option
Claro Honduras' roaming page has separate choices for prepaid and postpaid customers and a destination checker. It also names regional products, including América Sin Fronteras. Those names are not proof that a foreign visitor's home plan includes Honduras or that a local prepaid pack will work unchanged in Guatemala or Nicaragua. Check the exact origin line, destination, service type and allowance with its operator before a CA-4 border crossing or a trip involving several Central American countries.
A dual-SIM phone can retain the home number while the Honduran line carries data, but the charge for any home-line roaming still follows the home provider's terms. Near a border, check the displayed network before allowing data roaming; a phone can select another country's network according to signal and settings. Save the account login and support route while on a reliable connection, especially if a QR profile needs to be reinstalled.
Honduras' National Emergency System states that 911 is its telephone line for medical emergencies, fire, disasters and security needs. Store 911 with the accommodation address and a route landmark. The official page describes a telephone service; it does not say that a data-only eSIM can make an emergency voice call. Keep a voice-capable line and do not treat a working internet connection as evidence that emergency calling is available.
