Register a prepaid line before expecting it to work
A1 Macedonia says each prepaid SIM remains locked until the subscriber's name, identification number and address have been verified and entered in its records. Its registration page offers an online form, an A1 point of sale and SMS routes, but the form asks for a Unique Master Citizen Number. A visitor travelling on a foreign passport should therefore ask an A1 shop how it handles foreign documents before relying on the form. Carry the passport used at the border and allow time for the operator to complete registration; simply inserting a newly bought card does not establish that data is active.
A local prepaid line is useful when a Macedonian phone number matters for calls, texts or a service that sends a verification code. A data-only travel profile is simpler when the main needs are maps and messaging, but it does not automatically provide a Macedonian number. Decide which requirement matters before choosing a product. If a clerk offers a tariff, have them show the domestic data allowance, expiry, renewal and roaming terms on the current tariff page or receipt. Retain the packaging or activation email until the line has connected and a test page loads.
Compare Telekom's prepaid eSIM with A1's data bundles
Makedonski Telekom's current online shop has a prepaid eSIM checkout. The page displayed a one-off 499 denar total at the time of checking, but its text view does not identify a dependable data allowance or duration for that selection. Treat the amount as a checkout display rather than a complete tariff. Ask what it buys, when validity begins, whether it includes a number and how registration is completed. An eSIM profile can be added before departure on a compatible unlocked handset, but keep the QR code or activation instructions accessible without the connection being installed.
A1 publishes a monthly prepaid add-on labelled 66GB: it describes 60GB for domestic use and 6GB for specified roaming destinations, at 599 denars at the time of checking. Its page says activation is through the My A1 app or an SMS to 1410, and that renewal is automatic if the prepaid balance is sufficient. The add-on is therefore a different decision from obtaining and registering the underlying A1 line. Check that the required prepaid tariff is eligible, then turn off renewal through the app or the stated stop message if it would otherwise continue after the trip. A1 says it can withdraw the offer, so verify it at purchase.
Check coverage beyond Skopje and Ohrid
A1 names Skopje, Kumanovo, Bitola, Prilep, Ohrid, Struga, Tetovo, Gostivar and Mavrovo among areas reached by its 5G rollout. That is an operator description, not an assurance that a particular mountain road, lake shore or hotel room has a usable signal. The same A1 page still describes a nationwide target for the end of 2023, so its geographic list may be stale; consult the operator's latest coverage display for the exact address. A1 also says the handset and tariff must support 5G. Paying for a 5G package will not give a 4G-only phone a 5G connection.
An A1 quality filing for the Macedonian regulator separates population and territory coverage. That distinction is useful for a route from Skopje overland towards Ohrid, Mavrovo or a border crossing: a high population figure does not measure every stretch of road. Save maps and accommodation directions while connected, and check both the departure town and the intervening route before a long drive or hike. Where dependable work data is essential, a second profile only adds resilience if it can use a different underlying network. Neither an eSIM label nor a national coverage slogan answers that question.
Separate Western Balkans roaming from EU roaming
The Regional Cooperation Council says the Western Balkans roaming arrangement introduced a roam-like-at-home model in 2021. It covers the participating Western Balkan economies, including North Macedonia, for eligible regional subscribers under the agreement's terms. That does not turn an overseas tourist's home SIM into a regional line, and it does not promise that every Macedonian prepaid add-on uses its full domestic allowance abroad. Look for a separate roaming quota and fair-use conditions on the actual tariff. A1's 66GB add-on, for example, advertises 6GB of roaming data, with named countries and partner conditions distinct from the 60GB domestic portion.
The European Commission proposed opening negotiations in February 2026 to extend the EU roam-like-at-home regime to the Western Balkans. A proposal is not an operating EU roaming entitlement. Travellers arriving from an EU or EEA country should check whether their own operator lists North Macedonia and at what rate; a domestic EU allowance alone is insufficient evidence. A route that crosses into Greece, Bulgaria or another EU country may involve a different zone again. Check the tariff's country list for every border crossing, and keep automatic data roaming off on the expensive line until the correct profile is selected.
Use Skopje airport Wi-Fi to finish setup
Skopje International Airport says passengers can connect to its free TAV Airports Wi-Fi without a password. The airport also describes a shuttle bus linking the terminal with key stops in Skopje, with its timetable matched to flights. That makes the terminal a practical place to retrieve an eSIM QR code, complete an operator registration step, download the city map and check the current bus departure before leaving the building. Public Wi-Fi should not be the only copy of an address or booking confirmation: save those details on the phone before boarding the flight.
If the eSIM installation depends on an email message or an app sign-in, sign in while the phone still has a working connection. On arrival, confirm the selected data line and APN instructions from the provider, then load a page without airport Wi-Fi before entering the shuttle. For a physical local SIM, keep the home SIM safely and test incoming messages if a bank or transport service needs the home number. Dual-SIM support varies by handset and model; check its settings before travelling rather than discovering a limitation at the information desk.
Keep a route offline and know the emergency number
North Macedonia's Crisis Management Centre lists 112 as the round-the-clock emergency number and says calls are free from all operators. Store it with the address of where you are staying. A data-only eSIM should be treated as a data connection; its product description alone does not establish an ordinary voice service for calling 112. Keep a working voice-capable line or another means of contacting help, particularly before travel through sparsely populated areas. A map downloaded in advance remains useful when a signal is weak or the tariff has run out.
Before flying, check that the handset is unlocked, supports the chosen SIM format and can keep the needed home number active. After registration or eSIM installation, record the top-up route and the expiry date. A1's prepaid page offers an online top-up control; the same operator's 66GB add-on renews when balance is sufficient, so leaving unused credit on the line can matter. Travellers using both a home SIM and a Macedonian data profile should verify which line handles data and which line receives calls after every border crossing. This is especially relevant on a trip through Albania or Serbia, where a regional allowance may differ from the domestic one.
