The short runway and the daylight deadline
Saint Barth Tourism describes Saint-Barthélemy Rémy-de-Haenen Airport as renowned for its short runway and landings between hill and sea. It lists opening hours from 7:00 am daily, closing 15 minutes after sunset, between 6:00 and 7:00 pm depending on the season, a runway length of 650 metres by 18 metres, and the Collectivité de Saint-Barthélemy as the operator.
The airport hosts local and regional airlines including St Barth Commuter, Winair and Tradewind Aviation, with a snack bar, shops and more than ten car rental offices. Because flights stop at dusk, a delayed connection can mean an overnight stay at the transfer point, so keep your hotel booking and an eSIM or roaming plan active on the way. We found no mobile service information on the airport page.
Connecting through St Martin, Guadeloupe, Antigua or San Juan
The tourism site says there are no direct long-haul flights to Saint-Barthélemy and that most travellers arrive by transfer from Saint-Martin, Guadeloupe, Antigua or Puerto Rico, followed by a short connecting flight or a ferry. It lists airlines serving the island from those points and names the carriers that fly to St Martin and Guadeloupe from the United States, Europe, Canada and Latin America.
Each connection point has its own phone system and rules: the island of St Martin has two dialling codes, +590 and +1 721, and Guadeloupe is French, while Antigua and Puerto Rico are different again. If you rely on a local data plan from one of those places, check whether it works at your next stop, since local plans often do not roam. Our guides to Saint-Martin and Guadeloupe set out the details we found.
SFR Caraïbe lists Saint-Barthélemy among its roaming places
SFR Caraïbe's roaming page lists the places where its customers are billed at their home rates, and the list includes Saint-Barthélemy together with Saint-Martin, Guadeloupe, Guyane, Martinique, Mayotte and La Réunion. It says the benefit does not apply to 4G mobile-internet plans whose data is blocked outside the Antilles, and that it can check for abuse using indicators such as roaming use above local use over at least four months.
That list covers SFR's own customers. We found no prepaid, tourist or eSIM page for Saint-Barthélemy from an operator we could read, so we cannot give prices or say which networks cover the island. If you want a local line, ask your hotel or villa host what is available, and keep a travel eSIM as a backup.
Three months, three months of passport, and ID on demand
For St Martin and Saint-Barthélemy together, the UK Foreign Office says UK visitors can stay up to three months without a visa and that a passport must have an expiry date at least three months after the date of departure. It says French laws apply, that you must be able to prove your identity when asked or within four hours at a police station, and that crime levels are low but you should avoid isolated areas, including beaches, after dark.
It adds that a yellow fever vaccination certificate is needed if you arrive from a country listed as a transmission risk. Keep scans of your documents on your phone and the originals in the hotel safe, and note that rules differ by nationality.
Hurricane season and keeping informed
The UK Foreign Office says the hurricane season normally runs from June to November, and advises monitoring updates from the World Meteorological Organization and the US National Hurricane Center. It points to its extreme-weather guidance for what to do before and during a hurricane.
For a visitor on a small island, that means knowing who your accommodation will contact and saving local emergency numbers offline. We found no official statement on network resilience after storms.
Emergency numbers
The UK Foreign Office gives 112 for ambulance, fire and police in St Martin and Saint-Barthélemy, or 15 for an ambulance, 18 for fire and 17 for police. Keep your hotel's number in international format. Our Saint-Barthélemy plan page covers data before you arrive.
