Count 30 days of local use against the handset
Tajikistan's IMEI system says a foreign citizen can use local mobile service for 30 days without entering the phone's IMEI in the state database. A stay beyond that period calls for registration under the government's procedure. Its Russian-language FAQ separately says a foreign phone operating in international roaming does not need this registration. That distinction concerns the device and connection type, not the expiry date printed on a data pack. The FAQ also says an IMEI is entered into the database once, regardless of any change of SIM card.
Dial *#06# to see the IMEI numbers and use imei.tj or *3366# to check their status. The system explains that a dual-SIM device can have more than one IMEI, each relevant to the SIM slot used. It describes a grey status for a device awaiting customs clearance and says local calls, SMS and internet can stop after the allowed period if registration is not completed. If a trip may run beyond a month, ask the IMEI service about the declaration and application before activating a local line; its published call centre is 3366. The pages cited here do not state a registration fee for visitors.
Bring the right documents to a MegaFon service shop
MegaFon Tajikistan's shop document page says a foreign customer can conclude a mobile-service contract at a salon with a foreign passport and a registration certificate; it also lists residence and temporary-stay permits as identification routes. The operator says a foreign customer's connection is limited to the period of their stay in Tajikistan. Its document page is stricter than a generic instruction to bring only a passport, so ask the salon which proof applies to the actual immigration status before relying on a same-day local number.
MegaFon says it offers eSIM connection at its service offices with a passport and the compatible device. Its Life app route uses a chat with an adviser, passport photographs, a selfie with the document and an SMS code before an activation link is sent. An arriving visitor should not assume that this remote route bypasses the separate document requirement for a new foreign contract. At the time of checking, MegaFon's 2026 explanation said the first eSIM connection for a new subscriber is free, while a physical-to-eSIM switch, number change or move to another device costs 10 somoni. Those are the operator's own terms and may change; confirm the charge with the shop or adviser.
Price Tcell's G options by usable data and renewal
Tcell's published G options add internet traffic to an active line. At the time of checking, its page listed G 3000 with 3,000 MB for 40 somoni, G 5000 with 5,000 MB for 50 somoni and G 10000 with 10,000 MB for 80 somoni. It describes these as monthly fees and says the option is valid for 30 days from payment. They are not quoted as standalone tourist SIM prices; obtaining and identifying the underlying line is a separate step. Tcell's home page offers two ways to become a customer, ordering a SIM card online or visiting a service centre; the page does not say what identification either route needs.
The G page provides *870# or my.tcell.tj for checking remaining traffic and *870*0# to disable the option. It says traffic in G 3000 and larger options can roll to the next month if the fee is paid on time, but sums are subject to its detailed rules and a 180-day lifespan. An additional data purchase ends with the underlying G option; it does not automatically buy another complete month. This makes the remaining balance and renewal date worth checking before leaving Dushanbe for a longer journey.
Treat a coverage map as a town check, not a Pamir promise
Tcell publishes a coverage page naming settlements including Dushanbe, Khujand and Ishkoshim. Check the actual operator map for the planned stops rather than extending a city marker over the intervening valleys. MegaFon reported new network equipment in the Murghab district in 2026, an operator account of improvements at specific sites rather than proof that the whole Pamir Highway has 4G. The UK's Tajikistan travel advice states that mobile coverage in remote areas is extremely limited.
Road conditions reinforce the need for offline information. UK advice says the Dushanbe to Khujand road uses a tunnel that can be dangerous in winter, and that flooding and weather can damage roads in Gorno-Badakhshan, including sections of the Pamir Highway. Download route maps, accommodation details, permits and tickets while connected in a town. Agree a check-in plan before setting out on a remote leg, because a saved emergency number is of little use without service.
Check the profile before the Kyrgyz or Uzbek border
A domestic Tajik data option is not a regional roaming pass. Tcell says its activated domestic internet packages are not valid while roaming. Its Real Roaming must be switched on before departure from Tajikistan, while its Easy Roaming setting is designed to avoid automatic attachment to neighbouring Kyrgyz, Uzbek or Afghan partner networks while the customer is still near a Tajik border. It also lists a specific Roamer G10 package for Russia, Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan, rather than assuming all foreign destinations share one price.
Save mobile emergency numbers before leaving town
UK government advice lists Tajikistan's mobile emergency numbers as 103 for an ambulance, 101 for fire and 102 for police; it also gives shorter landline forms. It cautions that the emergency services do not speak English. Save the mobile forms and the next address in a form that can be read aloud in Russian or Tajik if help is needed. The same advice lists a Tourist Police mobile contact, but its availability cannot substitute for emergency services or a signal check.
Keep an active voice-capable SIM and check that the phone has the correct calling line selected. In the remote Pamirs, the UK's warning about very limited mobile coverage means that even a valid local voice line may not be enough; arrange appropriate journey communications with the trip organiser.
Set up the first day in Dushanbe deliberately
Before flying, confirm the phone is unlocked and can accept the intended eSIM or physical SIM, record both IMEI numbers and retain offline copies of the passport and stay information. MegaFon's foreign-customer page calls for a registration certificate alongside the passport; a visitor should clarify that requirement with the operator before treating an online eSIM offer as activated service. Note the local-SIM 30-day IMEI clock separately from any visa or accommodation paperwork. If an eSIM profile is downloaded before arrival, leave the existing home line available for verification until the new line has attached to a Tajik network.
After obtaining a local line, check the data balance and package renewal date. Tcell's G menu and My Tcell give usage routes; MegaFon's Life app handles its eSIM adviser flow. Save the address of the next stop and an offline map before setting out. UK advice describes a mainly cash economy with few rural ATMs, so arrange a way to pay for later top-ups in a town rather than assuming a card can be used at a mountain stop. Our Tajikistan plan page offers a data option to compare with a registered local line.
