The Nadi tourist SIM and the passport requirement
Vodafone Fiji's tourist SIM page says that all tourists coming to Fiji can get tourist SIM offers on arrival at the Vodafone Nadi Airport outlet. Customers are asked to present their passport to register and collect the SIM, and the page states that the acceptable identification is a valid physical passport. A scan on a phone is therefore not a safe substitute, so keep the passport in your hand luggage rather than in a checked bag.
The page describes further packages with preloaded benefits but does not list prices, so the figures have to be confirmed at the counter. After activation, it says, mobile data can be bought by dialling *555#, voice packages by dialling *143# and the balance checked on *131#. A support line, +679 990 2123, and live chat are listed.
Booking a tourist eSIM before you leave
Vodafone Fiji's tourist eSIM FAQ explains an online route: sign up with an email address or a Google account, choose Buy eSIM, enter your arrival details, pick a plan, verify identity and pay. Up to six eSIMs can be bought in one booking, which suits a family. According to the FAQ, a profile booked before arrival activates the night before you land, while one bought inside Fiji activates immediately after payment.
Installation is by scanning a QR code in the My eSIM area, and the FAQ says you need Wi-Fi or roaming data to install it. That points to a clear sequence: install while still on home Wi-Fi, because a visitor with no data cannot reach the QR page. The FAQ says coverage spans major towns and tourist areas but that remote locations may have limited signal.
Vodafone Fiji introduced eSIM in March 2021, which its media release called a first in the region. Its release listed iPhone, Samsung and Huawei models that supported it at the time, so confirm your own handset against the current list.
Where 5G has started and where it has not
Fijivillage reported that the 5G rollout began on Monday 15 September 2025, with three licensed operators: Digicel Fiji, Vodafone Fiji and Telecom Fiji. The first cities were Suva, Nadi, Lautoka and Denarau. The stated plan was Nasinu, Lami, Labasa and Savusavu in 2026, followed in 2027 by Nausori, Sigatoka, Navua, Ba, Tavua, Rakiraki and Korovou.
Vodafone Fiji's own release gives the same first phase and says later phases would reach Taveuni in 2027 to 2028. Its coverage-map page lists 5G areas by suburb, starting with parts of Suva, and its list differs in places from the phased plan above, so check the map for your own location. These are operator statements, and a 5G-capable phone still needs to be enabled for the network, so assume 4G on the islands and treat 5G as a bonus around Nadi and Denarau.
For islands, the operator's 2019 coverage release is a stated target rather than a measurement: it said 4G+ would reach 96 per cent of the population and mentioned Taveuni, Rabi and Laucala among planned areas. We could not find a regulator survey of island signal. Ask your resort what works at the villa, and expect gaps on boat transfers.
The arrival card and what customs asks about
The Fiji Revenue and Customs Service says that on arrival you present your completed Fiji Passenger Arrival Card, your passport and any supporting documents. You must declare prohibited or restricted items, currency of FJ$10,000 or more or its equivalent, and biosecurity risk goods; the page lists spot fines of FJ$400 for undeclared biosecurity items. It says personal items valued under FJ$2,000 are duty free when they accompany you, and it does not give a separate allowance for phones or laptops.
The Fiji Times reported in February 2023 that Cabinet was to consider a digital arrival card, noting that Fiji then used a physical card. We did not find an official source for a digital card in operation, so fill in the paper card on the plane and keep a pen in your hand luggage.
Emergencies, boats and remote islands
The UK Foreign Office lists 911 for ambulance, fire and police in Fiji, with 910 for fire only. Save both numbers and your accommodation's number offline before a boat transfer.
Vodafone's tourist offers mention voice packages, but check whether your profile has voice before relying on it. If a resort is on a smaller island, ask how guests reach emergency services if mobile signal is out, since that answer is more reliable than any coverage map.
Digicel, and keeping your home number
Digicel is the other main operator, and we could not open its Fiji visitor pages, so we do not quote its tourist plans. Check its current offer if you land after the Vodafone counter has closed.
Apple says an iPhone must be unlocked to take a travel eSIM and that you choose the line used for cellular data in Settings, Cellular, while iMessage and FaceTime keep using the home number. Google says Pixel 7 and later phones can run two eSIM profiles if the carrier supports it. Samsung describes adding an eSIM through SIM manager. Our Fiji plan page is an option if you want data before landing.
