SFR La Carte: a 2 euro SIM, and a promotion to 14 October 2026
SFR Mayotte's La Carte page describes a prepaid card bought in an SFR shop, topped up with communication credit, with options for unlimited calls or internet. The 100% Mayotte offer lists a SIM kit at 2 euros, no commitment and no risk of overspending. A promotion in its legal notes, valid from 3 September to 14 October 2026 for new customers, gives 5 euros of credit, a 2 euro base plus a 3 euro bonus, on a first top-up of at least 3 euros, with 5 GB of internet and unlimited weekend calls to Mayotte numbers from Friday 18:00 to Sunday 23:59.
That promotion is dated, so check whether it still applies. The page also lists an Illimitée six-month offer at 95 euros, with unlimited calls and SMS from Mayotte to Mayotte, Réunion, mainland France and the overseas departments, and 10 GB of 4G internet from Mayotte, with calls limited to three hours each and 100 different correspondents a month. The page does not say what identification a visitor must show, so ask in a shop.
eSIM: all plans are compatible, activated in a shop
SFR Mayotte's eSIM page says all its plans are compatible with eSIM and that activation is done in an SFR shop, where an adviser activates the eSIM through a QR code. It says an eSIM cannot be removed if the phone is lost or stolen and can be deactivated remotely, that you can add several eSIMs on one phone, for example a local plan abroad while keeping the SFR line, and it lists compatible phone and tablet models.
Because activation takes place in a shop, the page does not describe a download-before-you-fly eSIM for visitors. The operator says it runs a network of eight shops from Mamoudzou to Petite-Terre. A foreign eSIM can still sit on one slot of a dual-SIM phone while you buy a local SIM for calls.
The 2G network closes on 30 November 2026
SFR Mayotte says its 2G network will end on 30 November 2026, after which phones and devices that work only on 2G will stop working, and that it is reallocating the frequencies to 4G and 5G to improve coverage, speed and reliability. It asks customers with alarms, payment terminals or connected devices to check with their provider whether the equipment still uses 2G.
A modern smartphone is not affected, but a basic feature phone brought for a short trip might be. SFR's homepage advertises 5G mobile plans from 9.99 euros a month, aimed at subscribers rather than visitors, and we found no coverage map in the text we could read.
After Cyclone Chido: the network page and the Foreign Office
SFR Mayotte's network status page carries a notice about Cyclone Chido, last updated on 12 February 2025, saying that disruptions affected its mobile and fixed network, and that 99.99 per cent of the population had network coverage at that time, though it varied by area. It also lists a press release dated 21 January 2025 and a no-incident entry for submarine cable works on 22 May 2025.
The UK Foreign Office says most services in Mayotte have now been restored following Cyclone Chido in 2024, but some outages, including of drinking water and electricity, may still occur, and that the hospital remains open though not all services have been restored. It says the cyclone season normally runs from December to April. The notice on the operator's page is old, so treat it as history and check the page for current incidents.
Entry rules for a stay of up to 90 days
The UK Foreign Office says Mayotte is an overseas department of France and so part of the EU, that UK visitors can stay up to 90 days without a visa for tourism or business, and that a passport must have an expiry date at least three months after the date you plan to leave. It says you cannot take meat, milk or products containing them into EU countries, with some exceptions, and that you should check what cash and valuables you need to declare to bring them into Mayotte.
For driving, it says French driving laws apply and you may need an international driving permit as well as your UK licence. It also warns of a significant risk of piracy in the Gulf of Aden and the Indian Ocean for sailing yachts. Rules differ by nationality, so check the French visa website for your own passport.
