What the words on a plan mean, in plain language.
- Plan length (validity)
- How many days you can use the plan once it starts. Most plans start when the eSIM first connects at your destination, not when you buy it.
- Activation deadline
- How long after buying you have to start using the eSIM. The plan's days don't count down before then.
- Daily plans
- You get a fresh amount of high-speed data each day. After using it, you stay online at a lower speed until the next day.
- Fair use
- A network rule that lowers the speed after a certain amount of data, so everyone gets a good connection.
- Top-up
- Adding more data to the eSIM you already have, from your account. No new QR code needed.
- Hotspot / tethering
- Sharing your phone's data with a laptop or another device over Wi-Fi.
- Data roaming
- A phone setting that lets the eSIM use a partner network abroad. Travel eSIMs need it on; you only pay for your plan, never roaming fees.
- APN
- The internet setting a network uses. Most plans set it automatically; if one needs it typed in, it's in your setup email.
- Internet location
- The country websites think you're connecting from. It can differ from where you are and doesn't limit where the plan works.
- ID verification (KYC)
- Some countries require an ID check before a mobile plan can be used. The plan details say when.
- Data-only eSIM
- Gives you mobile internet without a phone number. Keep your usual SIM for calls and texts; calling apps work over data.
