AVISOAZORES: the emergency text that finds visitors' phones
The regional civil protection and fire service, SRPCBA, describes an SMS warning system under which mobile operators send civil protection alerts at its request. The sender always appears as AVISOAZORES and messages from similar-looking senders should be ignored. The text includes a 24-hour helpline number, +351 295 401 400, for questions. The service costs nothing and needs no registration, and the message goes to everyone on or near the affected islands when the request is made.
The page says customers of foreign operators in roaming are included, with a message in Portuguese and English, and that the alerts are exceptional, with other channels such as the PROCIV Azores app and press releases used first. It also says disabling reception is possible but not recommended, via a form sent to the service. For a visitor, the point is to keep roaming and text messages on, since a phone in aeroplane mode or with a data-only profile may not get the warning.
Trails with no signal, and the 500-metre poles
The Azores trails website's ethics and safety page advises hikers to take a fully charged phone for emergencies and says some areas along the trails may not have coverage. In its emergency notes it says that on many trails there is no mobile network except at the start and end of the walk, so calls should be made from those points. It gives 112 as the national emergency number and 800 292 800 for an environment hotline.
Each trail carries marker poles every 500 metres, and the page tells you to quote the number of the last pole you passed if you need a rescue, so the Civil Protection team can find you. Each trail's panel or leaflet gives the nearest fire brigade. Before you go, tell someone your route and return time, check the forecast and carry water, since stream and lagoon water is not safe to drink, according to the page.
Volcano and earthquake monitoring
CIVISA, the seismic and volcanic information and surveillance centre run by the University of the Azores and the regional government, says it manages the monitoring network, assesses the state of active volcanic systems and issues alerts to authorities and the public. Its homepage, when we read it, carried news from 8 September 2026 of seismic activity at Furnas volcano on São Miguel with the alert level at V1, and felt earthquakes with a maximum Modified Mercalli intensity of V.
That is a snapshot, not a forecast, and the page may have changed since. The UK Foreign Office says earthquakes are a risk in Portugal and points to the Azores monitoring centre for the islands. A visitor can check the centre's page and the civil protection alerts before travelling to São Miguel, and should follow local instructions if an AVISOAZORES text arrives.
Operator eSIMs and EU roaming on the islands
Vodafone Portugal's English page sells a travel eSIM for Portugal and Europe, listing at the time of checking 20 euros for 15 days with unlimited data for use in Portugal and 30 GB in Europe. It carries promotional prices to 31 August 2026, which have lapsed, and it does not say whether the Portugal allowance applies in the Azores, so confirm first. NOS lists monthly 5G tariffs with an eSIM option, which are customer plans rather than visitor offers.
For EU residents, the European Commission says Roam Like At Home applies in all 27 member states, so usage is charged as at home, and that the United Kingdom is outside the scheme unless your operator chooses otherwise. Whether the rule applies at the same quality on every island is a question for your operator, and we found no island-by-island coverage statement from the operators or the regulator.
Flights, boats and the island-hopping useful services page
Visit Azores says nine airlines fly to the Azores, seven with direct flights, with the archipelago about two hours from Lisbon and Porto and under six hours from the USA, and that between islands you can travel by boat and regional flights. Its useful services page lists airport and airfield numbers for each island, health centres and hospitals such as the Hospital Divino Espírito Santo in Ponta Delgada, fire brigades and police stations.
Save the number of your island's nearest hospital and fire brigade, since many are listed with local numbers. Because ferry and flight services between islands can change, keep your booking confirmations offline.
Entry rules and the emergency number
Under the Schengen rules explained by the UK Foreign Office, a UK passport holder visiting Portugal needs no visa for stays of up to 90 days within any 180, but the passport must be under 10 years old on arrival and valid three months past departure. The Entry/Exit System can also ask for fingerprints and a photo on first entry. It gives 112 for ambulance, fire and police, and advises hikers in Madeira and the Azores to leave their route with hotel reception and take a phone.
Rules differ by nationality. Our Azores plan page covers data before you arrive.
