The mainland France roaming rule
Arcep says travel between metropolitan France and Guadeloupe crosses two French telecoms markets. The European regulation for international roaming between European Economic Area states does not itself govern this movement. French law extends comparable protections, including the end of retail roaming surcharges, while allowing fair-use limits on mobile data. A mainland French customer should inspect the overseas allowance rather than assume the entire domestic data bundle applies.
Arcep lists Guadeloupe with Martinique, French Guiana, Réunion and other French overseas territories. The list does not establish terms for a plan issued in another country or for a journey onward to a neighbouring Caribbean island. Check the named territories and data cap with the home provider, and retain the tariff details for the trip.
SFR Caraïbe prepaid and data options
SFR Caraïbe markets SFR La Carte in Guadeloupe, Martinique and French Guiana. Classique focuses on calls; Smile adds 20 MB of internet with each recharge and an SMS allowance across named French territories. Twenty megabytes is small for repeated map use. At the time of checking, SFR lists additional data options of 150 MB for three days at €3, 250 MB for five days at €5 and 600 MB for ten days at €10. Activating an option requires sufficient prepaid credit.
La Carte has no subscription commitment or automatic debit, according to SFR. Its public offer page does not specify what identification a short-stay visitor must present, or confirm that La Carte can be issued as an eSIM. Ask a shop to confirm eligibility, documents and SIM format before making a special journey. The existence of a separate SFR eSIM product does not establish that this prepaid card shares the same activation route.
Buying and recharging across Guadeloupe
SFR's September 2026 shop list includes outlets at the Milenis centre in Les Abymes, rue Frébault in Pointe-à-Pitre, Destreland at Baie-Mahault and cours Nolivos in Basse-Terre. It also lists a Marie-Galante shop on rue de Beaurenon. Check current opening hours before setting out. This shop list does not establish the presence of an airport counter.
For an active La Carte line, SFR offers online recharge, calls to 224 or 223, and shops, partner sellers or post offices. Its recharge page says web credit must be finalised by calling 224 from the SFR phone. At checking, online credit amounts started at €3 valid for seven days and €5 valid for fifteen days. Credit validity and the separate duration of a data option are different clocks; check both if the stay spans more than a few days.
Residency limits and eSIM activation
Orange Caraïbe's tariff sheet reserves its Card Classique prepaid offer for residents of the French Antilles and Guiana. It states the same residency restriction for Card Seconde and Card Play. These products should not be assumed to be walk-in tourist solutions simply because they are prepaid. Ask Orange about a current product that accepts a visitor's circumstances before relying on one.
SFR Caraïbe's eSIM instructions begin with an existing customer who has an online account. They describe converting a physical SIM, replacing an eSIM and scanning a QR code using an internet-connected compatible phone. The instructions do not confirm that a newly arriving visitor can buy La Carte as an eSIM. Confirm product eligibility and activation method before depending on a digital profile at arrival.
Check the network on each island
Arcep's Mon réseau mobile service compares operator coverage and measured quality in overseas France. Its departmental maps include overseas territories, with the latest figures marked as the second quarter of 2026 at checking. Search the exact places on the itinerary: a hotel in Grande-Terre, a Basse-Terre road and a smaller island landing may give different answers from a Guadeloupe-wide claim.
Arcep's 2025 Antilles and Guiana field audit tested voice, SMS, web browsing, file transfer and video. The campaign included Guadeloupe and was conducted between January and April 2025. Measured quality and an operator's predicted outdoor coverage answer different questions. Use the detailed maps for the planned address, and save essential directions and bookings offline before leaving a reliable connection.
Data planning for Marie-Galante and Les Saintes
The Guadeloupe Islands Tourism Committee identifies the Bergevin terminal in Pointe-à-Pitre for Marie-Galante, Trois-Rivières for Les Saintes and Saint-François for La Désirade. It says ferry schedules can vary by season and tickets may be purchased online or at the dock. Check the current sailing before leaving accommodation, then save the booking, terminal location and return time on the phone.
The committee's Comadile listing places its station in Saint-François and describes a service to La Désirade. Use Arcep's maps for the island destination as well as the departure town. Neither an island coverage map nor a timetable promises data during an offshore crossing. Carry an offline copy of tickets and contact details if a day trip depends on a particular return sailing.
Set the data line before flying
Apple says a supported, unlocked iPhone can keep a home line and a second travel eSIM active. Check the carrier-lock status and eSIM support before paying for any profile. Apple describes selecting which line supplies data; its guidance also warns that the home line can still incur roaming charges when both lines remain active. Install the eSIM with dependable internet and keep activation instructions accessible.
Before departure, check whether a French mainland plan includes Guadeloupe data, or whether another plan names Guadeloupe specifically. On arrival, select the intended data line and review roaming settings for both lines. A retained home number can be useful for messages while the second line supplies data, where the phone and plans support that arrangement. Save the SFR shop location and ferry confirmation before setting out.
Keep a voice route for emergencies
France's public service lists 112 as the European emergency number, 15 for medical emergencies, 17 for police, 18 for fire and 196 for maritime rescue. It also explains that 0 800 112 112 is a callback number used by emergency services, not a number for placing a fresh emergency call. Save the appropriate numbers before a boat journey to Les Saintes or La Désirade.
The cited public-service page does not establish that a data-only eSIM can make an ordinary voice call or an emergency call on its own. Keep a working voice-capable SIM or another way to contact help, and check the phone's emergency-call instructions. Disabling the home line to control roaming charges may also remove the voice route a traveller expected to use.
